Should the Pens Bring In Claude Lemieux?

Postby Mad City Mike on Tue Dec 30, 2008 9:27 am

No, not Mario. Claude. I heard last night he has to pass through waivers before he can play for San Jose. The Pens need some grit and toughness. Is it worth a shot?

Personally, I say no. he's too old and hasn't even played in years. I have serious doubts that he will be his former agitating self. Let him go rot in San Jose.

Now, if it was Shanahan we're talking about...

Is there any other point to this thread, other than to make people think you're talking about Mario? Because it doesn't work anymore. It's overdone.

No, I was actually hoping people would debate whether it's worth claiming Claude on waivers. Personally, I don't. But maybe there are some who think it would be a good idea.

Edit: I changed the title just to avoid this type of criticism.

I wouldn't claim him. I am surprised that San Jose is going to bring in someone like this with the type of year they are having...

I think it would have been easier to get a debate going if you said they should claim him.

What, and make myself sound like an idiot? No thanks.

The only pro to bringing him in is that they do lack grit and veteran leadership and he could address both those issues. But it's not worth the risk.

Avery would be better to bring in than Claude.

I recently read a write-up about potential NHL landing spots for Sean Avery if/when his suspension is lifted, and while the article certainly mentioned Avery's reputation as a locker room cancer would play into any interest other teams may have, it also used the Lemieux comeback in San Jose as evidence that teams are all looking to find that edge to put them over whatever playoff hump.

I do think there's some legitimacy to the Lemieux comeback, as Lemieux is a guy who could very well make life absolutely miserable for the Red Wings in the postseason.

A lot of these deals that are made to acquire some sort of veteran to provide an intangible for a post-season run aren't going to be knock-you-over deals. Many of us - myself included - weren't all that thrilled when Shero gave up Noah Welch for Gary Roberts. A month later, Roberts was a cult hero.

Am I comparing Roberts to weasels like Avery and - to a lesser extent - Claude Lemieux? No. But Roberts brought certain elements of toughness and some intangibles that Avery and Lemieux both bring, albeit in different ways, and those are things that become high-demand commodities for teams gearing up for the postseason.

So no, I don't believe the notion of acquiring Claude Lemieux is an outlandish one, at least for San Jose. I don't know if it would work here. I can certainly see why San Jose would like to bring him in; Detroit absolutely loves the guy. I'd like to see the Pens add some toughness and grit, but I think they can do so with different players.

O common guys why in hell we should bring in 43years old player? he was out for a while,is slower and not as much effective as was maybe 4-5 years ago. It much better that we sign Shanny or even bring back Roberts,if..

No, no, and no. I'd rather sign Brendan Shanahan off the scrap heap and/or trade for Gary Roberts than bring that guy here.

I think he picked San Jose because that is a place he wanted to play and they saw a fit for him. I don't think many teams indicated an interest in him other than the Sharks so it is very unlikely that he would agree to play for anyone else.

But if the Rangers picked him up I would be neither surprised nor unhappy. :D

I've heard that SJ has no plans of actually calling him up, they just signed him to the 2-way as a formality in order to open up his chances a bit more, with another team. He had originally signed a deal with Worcester that had nothing to do with San Jose (aside from the obvious affiliation), as in he had no obligation to the SJ Sharks in any way, and they had no obligation to him.
