Who? Even Pavel Datsyuk is under 20 minutes a game.

He's just making things up. Obviously if you look up the ice time numbers, there are no third-line centers that play nearly as much as Staal does night in and night out.

Also, does anyone realize that his cap hit is already $2.2 million? So, we get him for four more years at $1.8 million more?

For those of you who think he makes $850,000 or $984,000, you can look at it if he only makes $2.65 million or $2.79 million...all better?

This contract is not eligible to have a no-trade clause because it does not go into years in which he would be a UFA...he would have been a restricted free agent for all four years of the extension and therefore there cannot be a no-trade or no-movement clause...

Yes and that's probably what he's worth considering Talbot's contract.

Unless Staal is moved to the wing, I'm not sure how they can justify paying $4m for the 3rd line center when you have glaring weaknesses on the wing.

Then again, if you compare him to Satan, he's a complete bargain :D

No. It's not. But if you aren't able to comprehend this, that's okay too.

Maybe you aren't comprehending what I'm saying.

You're saying this...

Dupuis - Crosby - Kennedy
Fedotenko - Malkin - Sykora
Cooke - Staal - Max
Wallace - Jeffrey - Satan

Finally no more trade talk about that Pooch Gaborik.
I ma hoping Staal turns it around I have been a total basher of his recently, maybe this will spark him a bit. He has a lot of good things going for him in regard to penalty killing and PP time. I wouldnt be surprised if he started on wing this evening.

Now back to MT and YEO. Can we find a way to rip up their contract.

And Orpik the same time as Malkin.

I could see Crosby signing before the year starts, but Whitney and Staal could both be looking to get big raises depending on how things go.

Really its not relevant. It's 3.5 mill more a year than what we'd be paying talbot. Which is 3.5 million less that we'll have to spend on getting a quality winger.

This isnt a good move I'm sorry. The Pens now have way too much money tied up in centers. Get use to more Satans for the next several years because we just arent going to be able to afford to bring in legit wingers when we are paying our centers this much money.

I really hope Staal proves me wrong but he just doesnt deserve 4 million a year. He is incredibly inconsistent, overrated defensively, isnt a good skater, and shows no scoring touch at this point in his career. I really don't like this move by Shero. But again, I hope I'm wrong.

Regardless of when he does this, we play more with Sid/Malkin having their own lines. If you are going to pay a guy $4m a year, on our team the way it's constructed and with the cap, he's got to be playing the wing.

Next year, we'll have $21.4 million of the cap tied up in 3 centers. That's approximately 38.2% of the cap!

I agree completely. If you just analyze Staal in a vacuum then maybe you can justify the contract, but on our team it's too much money for the role he fills.

If it were up to me, I would put him on Malkin's wing starting tonight and leave him there.

I'm kind of mixed on this deal. I think in the end it will be a good one because Staal is going to improve and he will play up to the contract. I was hoping for a trade that would bolster the club immedietly, but I guess it's better to think long term. Seriously with Max on the team, I would put Staal with Sid or Malkin the rest of the year and force him to learn to be a good winger. I've liked him as a wing better than a center as long as he's been here. Playing on the wing would force him to work on his board work and with his body the sky is the limit. To be a center you need to be a better passer and create more offensive chances. Playing wing suits his game better. He has a decent shot, he just needs to work on the release. He needs to play with Sid, drive hard to the net and wreck havoc.

I'm aware it goes beyond even strength, but he's still the 3rd line center at $4m a year!

If this were the early 90's Penguins, I'd have no problem with this when you have the wingers of Stevens, Jagr, Tocchet, Mullen, etc. But we have a major weakness on the wings and can't afford to pay a 3rd line center $4m when we already have $17.4m tied up in our # 1 and 2 centers.. This is my point.

Is Staal important? Yes. Is he an important person on the PK? Yes. Is he someone we want out there with a minute to go? Yes. Can this team afford to tie up so much money in centers if they don't have complimentary wingers? I don't believe so.

That is my point. Most of the game is played 5 on 5, ya know?

In the long run...he was our only tradeable commodity. It kind of blows that we lose Malone...can't help but think this could have been applied to a Malone contract.
