I don't know if anyone remembers, but a a long time ago
, I posted some pictures of some custom Penguin figures I had done - Konstantin Koltsov and Ryan Malone.
Fast forward to the end of the lockout, and rumors were running wild that Alexei Kovalev was coming back to Pittsburgh. I had an extra Sergei Fedorov fig lying around and thought the pose was perfect for Kovy:
As we all know, those rumors never came true, so the project was shelved.
Fast forward again to December 2008. I was going through some stuff, saw the Fedorov fig and thought, "If I could get this done in 3 weeks, it would be a pretty good Christmas present for my wife." (Judy, for those that don't know, is a big Kovalev fan.) I had forgotten how time consuming these are, and as it turned out, 3 weeks was no where enough time; I finished it last night. Decal work is a pain (especially finding good enough images to use), and there are 3 on the base and a total of 21 on the figure itself. There's an NHL logo on the back of the right leg that can't be seen in the pics. Can you spot the others?
Here's how it came out:
This is the 3rd custom I've ever done, and IMO, by far and away the best. I think the gold outline on the arm numbers is too thin and the black stripe on the arms and hips might need to be thicker. Other than that, I'm very happy with how it came out. And more importantly, Judy is happy with it.
Parts used: Sergei Fedorov base fig, Alex Kovalev head, Owen Nolan helmet, Scott Stevens stick
