Custom Alexei Kovalev, 2000-01 Pittsburgh Penguins

Postby netwolf on Sun Jan 25, 2009 1:37 pm

I don't know if anyone remembers, but a a long time ago, I posted some pictures of some custom Penguin figures I had done - Konstantin Koltsov and Ryan Malone.

Fast forward to the end of the lockout, and rumors were running wild that Alexei Kovalev was coming back to Pittsburgh. I had an extra Sergei Fedorov fig lying around and thought the pose was perfect for Kovy:

As we all know, those rumors never came true, so the project was shelved.

Fast forward again to December 2008. I was going through some stuff, saw the Fedorov fig and thought, "If I could get this done in 3 weeks, it would be a pretty good Christmas present for my wife." (Judy, for those that don't know, is a big Kovalev fan.) I had forgotten how time consuming these are, and as it turned out, 3 weeks was no where enough time; I finished it last night. Decal work is a pain (especially finding good enough images to use), and there are 3 on the base and a total of 21 on the figure itself. There's an NHL logo on the back of the right leg that can't be seen in the pics. Can you spot the others? :D

Here's how it came out:

This is the 3rd custom I've ever done, and IMO, by far and away the best. I think the gold outline on the arm numbers is too thin and the black stripe on the arms and hips might need to be thicker. Other than that, I'm very happy with how it came out. And more importantly, Judy is happy with it. :D

Parts used: Sergei Fedorov base fig, Alex Kovalev head, Owen Nolan helmet, Scott Stevens stick

That's beautiful work. Great attention to detail, looks a lot like Kovy. Very impressive stuff.

Where did you get the decals?

Wow. Very impressive!

How long does it take you to do one of those?

Thanks guys.

Doc: I made the decals myself. All you need is a decent printer, some specialty paper that lets you make waterslide decals (like what you'd get if you've ever built model cars or planes), some clear spray paint, and a ton of time and patience to find all of the artwork you need. In the three figs I've done, this is always the most difficult and time-consuming part of it.

Bob: I started this one the first week of December and finished last night, so this one was about 7-8 weeks. Part of that was because I had to work in secret so Judy wouldn't find out about it, plus I didn't have as much free time with the holidays.

It'd be really cool to see one of Sid carrying the cup above his head.

What are the dimensions of the figure (approximately)? I'm amazed at the detail you have on there.

Great job!

What'd the wife say? Did she see it yet?

One of the NHL logos is on the back right of his jersey.

Wow...that is impressive! And it actually looks like the person it is supposed to look like, unlike the bobbleheads you get at the games.

Again, thanks for all the compliments everyone. :)

WWGRD/opie: The head came off of a Montreal Kovalev figure, so I can't take credit for the likeness. ;)

Bob: This one is about 5" to 5.5" tall. The long side of the base is just under 7". Judy was very happy with it and mind-boggled at the detail I put into it. I'm saving up the bonus points for the next time I drop more money into collecting these things. :D

I am superstitious, so I'll not be making a Sid w/ the Cup over his head. At least until after he actually does it. ;)

SolidSnake: I know some guys that do just that, but I just wouldn't have the time. Plus, I'm not sure if I'd be as into making them if I wasn't the person picking who to do. Plus, then you get bogged down with things like timeframes and deadlines... I think that would take some of the enjoyment out of it for me.

Doc: It was difficult. I think it tooke me the better part of 3 weeks just to gather, tweak, and prep all the artwork I needed. And I might still be looking if it wasn't for someone helping me out by drawing up the nameplate and number for me. The only similar stuff I could find was so pixelated/jagged, it wasn't worth using.

Kick: Dude. They're action figures. Dolls are soff and for girls. :P

JS: The paints are just regular acrylic craft paint. You can get them at WalMart or Michael's for less than a buck a piece. Then when you're all done, you seal it with a few coats of Krylon Crystal Clear to protect the finish and a few coats of dull coat so it isn't too shiny.
