PG Headline: "RAY SHERO FIRED BY LEMIEUX/SAWYER, K2 NAMED NEW GM"

-Therrien, Yeo relieved of duties. Lemieux, if he can be convinced, steps behind the bench as interim head coach, with either Bylsma from WBS or a competent, unemployed FOM as an assistant.
-Lemieux works his magic and calls Jagr, asking him to join the team. Double-J does so.
-Move Boucher, Satan, Eaton for any picks, prospects, or waive them.
-Trade TB's 3rd rounder to OTT for Christoph Schubert
-Trade Staal to FLA for Horton, possibly including Satan, Boucher or Eaton somehow.
-Recall Jeffrey and Bissonnette
-Send Gogo to WBS to log minutes, knowing Schubert and Biss can play D in a pinch

Then, hopefully the lines going into the playoffs with everybody healthy:

Horton-Crosby-Jagr
Fedotenko-Malkin-Sykora
Cooke-Talbot-Kennedy
Dupuis-Jeffrey-Schubert

Orpik-Gonchar
Whitney-Scuderi
Letang-Gill

Extras: Bissonnette, Godard

A little far-fetched? Perhaps, but if the reunion of Lemieux and Jagr can't get this team going, nothing can. I think that's a lineup built for the playoffs. If unable to get Jagr, trade Whitney to VAN for Raymond and Bieksa, and hold on to Staal, recall Minard rather than Jeffrey

Minard-Crosby-Raymond
Fedotenko-Malkin-Sykora
Kennedy-Staal-Cooke
Dupuis-Talbot-Schubert

Orpik-Gonchar
Bieksa-Letang
Scuderi-Gill

Extras: same as above

A little far fetched? How about one in a million chance? Number one, Lemieux hates the spotlight, hence the complete lack of interviews and whatnot. The man is (somewhat) out of the spotlight, and that won't be changing...ever. Number two, Lemieux's game was derived from God-given talent and a mind that was able to comprehend what was going on at a much faster pace than anyone else on the ice. He was not a big practicer, not a big trainer, and not a big motivator. He led by being the best, and he was the best because of natural gifts. For those reasons, even if he didn't want to avoid the spotlight, he'd be a bad choice as a coach...even if just in the interim. Number three, Jagr's return to Pittsburgh -- at least this season -- can be ruled out 100%. First, there is his KHL contract, which has one year remaining beyond this one. The NHL, I have a feeling, isn't all that interested in stirring the pot with the Russians once again. Then, there is the fact that he has played in another pro league this year, making waivers a mandatory process before reporting to any team. In other words, if he signs with the Pens, he'll have to clear waivers before reporting. Chances of that happening, especially if he's on a "hometown discount"? Zilch. Wade Dubielewicz didn't even clear waivers when he signed with the Islanders.

First, I'm going to re-hire Shero as my assistant. Just because I like him.

Next, I'm going to re-assign the coaching staff to new positions within the organization (Therrien needs to be kept for his soundbytes) and bring on Idoit40fans as head coach, and eastonpensfan as his assistant. I'll let them detail their plans for the team.

(For serious.)

 Good choices. I hope they hold a press conference, live on LGP, with their respective new positions.

I think they have some really good ideas. Hopefully they'll come in & share them. Otherwise, I'll have to resign from my new position rather quickly.

IN MAJOR SHAKE-UP, RU10TU10 REPLACES SHERO AS PENS GM

And...

Instructs Therrien to split Crosby and Malkin on the power play...

Staal-Malkin-Sykora
Dupuis-Crosby-Satan to be the new units...

Signs Scuderi to a 3 year 6 million deal...

Fire Iceburgh - replaced by Idoit40fans

Have the Delta Dental Pens Patrol dance to Cotton-Eyed-Joe every game.

Make sure that half-season Plan A season ticket holders get all the really neat giveaways (come on, mouse-pads two years in a row is a bit much)

Instruct the ushers to immediately eject those who wear large hats, sit on the edge of their edge seats in E28, or in any shape or form block the view of those sitting behind them.

I am serious about the power play and Scuderi...

If and only if we were a team with a shot at the cup:

Godard and 3rd round pick for Antropov (Pit/Tor)
Satan, Whitney and conditional 3rd (if Gaborik signs) for Gaborik/Zidlicky (Pit/Min) (Zidlicky is a VERY good defenseman)
Boucher to Anaheim for a 3rd round pick (Pit/Ana)

Antropov - Sid - Gaborik
Fedotenko - Malkin - Sykora
Cooke - Staal - Kennedy
Dupuis - Talbot - Jeffery/Wallace
Biz

Orpik - Gonchar
Gill - Letang
Gogo - Scuderi
Eaton

Fleury
Garon

We part with $10.75m in salary and take on $11.733

We trade:
Godard
Satan
Whitney
Boucher
3rd round pick (TB)
3rd round pick (Conditional - Pit)

We acquire:
Antropov (UFA at the end of this year)
Gaborik (UFA at the end of this year)
Zidlicky ($3.35 cap hit till 09/10)
3rd round pick (Ana)

After this season:

determine if Scuderi wants to stay for $2M a season.
If he does: see if you can get a pick for Eaton, if you can: do it and sign scuderi, if you can't: let Scuds go
If he doesn't: let him go, keep Eaton.
re-sign sykora for the same contract if you can. $3M at most per season.

8.70 Crosby
8.70 Malkin
4.00 Staal
3.00 Sykora
1.40 Dupuis
1.20 Cooke
1.05 Talbot
0.80 Kennedy(I think its around .8)
0.75 God
29.6 Total

5.00 Gonchar
4.00 Whitney
3.75 Orpik
2.00 Eaton/Scuderi
1.50 Goligoski(?+)
0.85 Lovejoy
0.85 Letang(?)
17.95 Total

5.00 Fleury
1.00 Garon
6.00 Total

29.60
17.95
06.00
53.55 Total

Thats with 7 D and 2 goalies which is ok, but only 9 forwards. I'm glad i'm not an NHL GM.

Its clear that Staal is more than just a 3rd line center right now(even when both Crosby and Malkin are both centering), but its hard to see how the pens can succeed without that contract being turned into an top 6 even strength player whether it be him or someone else.

PG Headline: "RAY SHERO FIRED BY LEMIEUX/SAWYER, SAMS_DOG NAMED NEW GM"

1. Buy Sam a drink
2. Tell Therrien to put Staal at LW and keep him there for at least 10 games to see if he can make it.
3. If he does make these trades:
Whitney, Satan and a 2nd round pick (prob would have to be a #1 though) to Florida for Nathan Horton
Eaton/Boucher and Fedotenko to Atlanta for Armstrong
Dupuis to NY Islanders for Brendan Witt (they're dumb enough)

Staal - Crosby - Horton
Kennedy - Malkin - Sykora
Cooke - Talbot - Armstrong
BizNasty -Thomas - Godard -

Gonchar - Orpik
Letang - Scuderi
Gill - Witt
GoGo

4. If Staal doesn't fit at wing then do this:
Staal, GoGo to Florida for Nathan Horton
Eaton/Boucher and Fedotenko to Atlanta for Armstrong
Dupuis to NY Islanders for Brendan Witt (they're still dumb enough)

Also, why are you so eager to overpay for Horton? Staal or Whitney would be equal value, if you had to add anything it would be a mid range pick, not Goligoski or Satan. Satan hurts the deal in fact.

Why is that? Is it the fact that Brown is their captain, the fact that he is a 30 goal scorer with a ~3 million dollar cap hit, or is it the fact that the 2 players they'd be giving up are overall better than the 3 the pens would be giving up?

I fire Mike Yeo immediately. Satan for a late pick to whoever would take him. Boucher for a mid round pick, again, to for whoever would take him.

That is all. This team should be playing better, if we miss the playoffs I fire the remaining coaching staff.

You would probably be immediately fired. Colby Armstrong is not worth more than Ruslan Fedotenko, at least in terms of trade value. Maybe to this fan base's psyche and affection, yes, but if we're trading Ruslan plus a veteran NHL defenseman, we're going to more than just Colby Armstrong back. Brendan Witt is a pylon. He's old, slow and generally useless, especially on a team like the Penguins that requires fast, puck moving defensemen to feed our young crop of forwards. The Islanders would pull the trigger immediately and then laugh about it for days if that trade were offered to them.

I'd look at aquiring a brad stuart type of defenseman to bring a little consistency to the defensive corps. I'd ask Fluery to start winning some games on his own. I'd leave the coaching staff intact over the remainder of the season, but if the team continues to struggle, changes would obviously have to made.

I really don't think there needs to be that much wheeling and dealing.

Mike Yeo is let go, replaced from within by Eddie Johnston (torch me if you like, but this guy knows how to run a PP) if he'll consent, if not then find someone with actual real-life NHL coaching experience.

The Fedotenko-Malkin-Sykora unit remains intact, as does Bissonnette-Jeffrey-Godard. Staal is given a suitable trial period on LW, making the temporary line Staal-Crosby-Satan. Dupuis-Talbot-Kennedy is used as an energy line. Upon Gonchar's return, Whitney is moved to Florida to replace Jay Bouwmeester, in return the Pens receive Nathan Horton. Satan is waived or dealt for a late pick. Scuderi is signed immediately.

My appreciation of Ray Shero is up 97.35% after reading through this thread.

And to play along, if I was named GM, my first act of duty would be to fire myself and replace with someone who wouldn't build their team like a fantasy hockey team. (as I would). 8-)
