He had 12 shots on goal today, according to Yahoo's box score.
Also, he has really upped his statstics recently. He quietly has 31 points in 52 games this season. That's certainly not setting the world on fire, but considering his start, he has really turned things around offensively. Plus, he made several nice plays defensively today. I really think his poor play has been about adjusting to the new NHL and possibly some sort of an injury. He doesn't appear to be lazy out there at all.
I think a lot of people expected him to be a good all-around defenseman, when in actuality, he is little more than a forward playing the defense position. The Penguins would be extremely smart to invest in a defensive specialist to pair him with -- someone who could compensate for Gonchar's errors. Remember, in the past, Gonchar has had very reliable partners to cover for him. This has not been the case in Pittsburgh, and he, quite possibly, could be trying to do too much, thus negatively affecting his game all around.
Also, another quick note. It seems as though Ryan Malone has decided to play hockey. He is looking like the '03-'04 Malone. He's going to the net, keeping his feet moving, playing physical, and get results. Lets hope he keeps this up.
Lastly, I have been impressed with Recchi. Early in the season I thought he looked somewhat invisible, though the points were there. Now, he seems to have gotten his second wind and is playing decent hockey -- at least offensively. I'd really like to see him play well for one of 2 reasons. First, he may play so well that a contender would offer a nice package for him -- maybe Philly or Ottawa? Of course he'd have to accept a trade, but if the team is a legit contender, I would be surprised if he didn't. The other option would be for him to just retire at season's end. I like the guy, and it's always nice to see players finish on a good note. Seeing as how he has had a somewhat lackluster year, it might be time to hang em up, and what better way than to do it on your own terms, when you put up a relatively decent showing?
