GM Ray Shero on HockeyCentral

Postby Draftnik on Fri May 29, 2009 12:42 pm

Just wrapped up segment with Maclean and Millard. A few interesting topics:

Snow (as widely reported) had another deal lined up for Guerin. It fell through. Shero said the Pens scouted him quite a bit in the few weeks leading up to the deadline and they were not too impressed. (paraphrasing) Guerin wasn't playing physically and wasn't playing at a high level. They gambled that the trade would reinvigorate him.

A perfect example of his mentor David Poile telling him it is better to be lucky than good.

HCDB's biggest change has been open door communication rather than system changes. The atmosphere in the room changed and the team picked up its play.

Credited MT for changing the culture of play and installing structure, but for whatever reason he couldn't stem the tide this year so a change had to be made.

Shero did not want to give up a 1st or 2nd round pick this year at the deadline.

MAF is making critical saves at critical times. Shero named the Carter, Ovechkin, and Staal saves as game saving/changing. Compared MAF to Gary Cheevers.

Solid, thanks...

Shero had a great deadline. He gave up minimal value and got real assets...

Shero also said he is very pleased with Kunitz despite the lack of goals. He compared him to Jarko Ruutu (RS said Ruutu is one of his alltime favorite players) when Ruutu didn't have any goals through NOV one season and RS said "Ruutu is the best player with no goals in the NHL"

Around when Guerin was yanked off the ice, remember canadian reporters saying he was going to CAPS.

GM Shero has a classy and nice human side that comes through in his approach to running the penguins.

It's a joke. Get it? It gets funnier every thousand times it's made, right? Hilarious!

Interesting... not only because it's the truth, but that Shero is so open about this. That's a good thing.

Thanks for posting.

Good to get an idea as to what Shero was thinking - pretty much in line with what a lot of us here were thinking too - *caugh*, minus the Gaborik/Jagr stuff :)

Wow, isn't that telling.

This is a young team with bunch a kids who want to have fun - not too much fun - just some, and don't want to have some uptight guy yelling at them all the time.

I read earlier this year, how DB's office door is always open and any player can just walk in for a talk with the guy (in contrast with MT). He is friendly and communicative.

DB = FTW!

No wonder Andre Savard wasn't kept as well since he was referred to as a "mute." LOL

I enjoyed the beat writers and national guys giving Shero an average deadline grade. I think he's well into the A+ category. He gave up nothing for something.

Edit:Yes Whitney counts as nothing.
