because they are Detroit? Not really sure if there is another one of their "traditions" behind it.

from wiki... doesnt really explain why...

Uniforms

The Red Wings, like all NHL teams, updated their jerseys (traditionally known in hockey as "sweaters") to the new Rbk Edge standard for the 2007–08 NHL season. The Red Wings kept their design as close as possible, with a few exceptions: On the road (white) jersey, there is more red on the sleeves as the color panel begins closer to the shoulder. The white sleeve numbers on both jerseys were also moved up a bit, creating more red space between the bottom of the number and the wraparound white trim. The letters of the captain and alternate captains were moved to the player's right shoulder; Detroit is the only team in the league that made this change, although the 2008 NHL All Star jerseys featured this as well. All teams now have an NHL shield panel on the front of the jersey near the collar, and a rounded hemline at the bottom of the jersey which goes up at the hips, providing more mobility.

The reason they have it on the other side then all the other team is because of the new rbk jerseys the teams have this year. with the wings jerseys since the stiching is based on lines the winged wheel was so big there wasnt enough room on the right side of the jerseys to put another stiching with the captain letters on tht side so they had to put it on the other side.

from their announcers and yahoo.

I think it looks retarded the way they have it now.

Not a fan of it.

Its cuz when they made the new jerseys for every team a few years ago, a lot of the teams inceased the size of the crest on the front. Detroit did that and because they did the wing tip of their logo now occupied the space where the C would normally go. Thus, the moved it to the opposite side.

Sincerely,
Why do I know this stuff?

Yeah I don't like the look of them either, the only team to have their letter on the other side...

Q: I can't help but ask, was "CHEESE" a real player or your name you had put on this jersey? Thanks. -Randy May-27-09
A: It was my brother's name. The number 5 was worn by an actual player. I figured there must another "CHEESE" out there that is a Penguins fan.
