John Steigerwald said it

Postby Crash on Tue Jul 18, 2006 9:48 pm

"Your local politicians want Harrah's to get the license"

He also said that if the IOC looses the people here should ask the locals leaders why it's BETTER to have the tax payers pay for an arena instead of using the free arena the IOC is offering.

I agree with pretty much everything he said in his "soundoff"...

Who cares. I just want the Pens to stay and get a sweetheart lease. If that happens everybody wins. If the Pens hadn't used IoC to tie the arena issue to the slots issue hardly anybody in this town would care who got the slots license.

I wonder what the IOC gets out of this. Since they were merely used as a pawn so to say...

That's what Ron Cook said. I agree with that too. I still think the IOC is a better deal, but if Plan 'B' works, I'm all for it. I just want them to stay. And I really want an ownership group like Murstein or Rennacci to get them because in their mind, the city of Pgh is best for the team and they are not forced to stay here.

Great PR for whenever Pens fans travel to a destination, we will drop our quarters into their machines instead of the competion. :D

i agree 100%....nearly everything that comes out of that man's mouth is on target, whether it be the stillers, the crappy bucs, or the pens. he has a great perspective on everything. he should run for a government office!

my favorite of his quotes is 'if the pens leave, i leave too.'

I've seen some decent political commentary from the John variety in the past, good enough to be linked on RCP

Money talks, so it would be best for the PITTSBURGH Penguins for Rennacci's group to be the buyer.

JS is probably the most negative of the journalists I've seen in the Burgh, but he does tell it like it is. His position on the Pirates is the same as mine. Why should I bother to support them when they are doomed to failure anyhow?

It is the best plan.

Let's see what the local politicians have strived for over the last 10 years:

1) New arena with private funding? Check.
2) Bringing people into downtown ala Fifth and Forbes plan? Check.
3) Revitalizing a neglected area? Check.
4) Reconnecting a section of the city to the downtown to revitalize and rekindle urban culture? Check.

Okay, and Harrah's will give us major traffic jams and luxury apartments that are not downtown.

It is so obvious the fix is in. I don't know what people can do about it, except not accept Rendell and Onorato when they bold face lie and tell them they want an investigation to where money is being diverted to. I would say, start a criminal investigation, but that would only delay the process for years.

Ahh, good ol' Steigy.........the only media person in town with the guts to call out the All-Star game for the turd polishing that it was (personally, I call it blood money for Kev to shut up and take the baseball system as-is, but that's a bit extreme for TV :D).

We certainly have to give the man some credit, for suggesting that the Pens apply for the license in order to save the team, and for making Nightly Sports Call watchable on the nights that he's there (I'm not a big fan of Bob "Jordan Staal MIGHT be related to Eric" Pompianni and his Pirate ass-kissing), and I also feel bad for him having to get stuck in his unenviable position during the whole Mike Lange firing fiasco.
