Did the pens resign Zigomanis?

Postby SolidSnake on Fri Jul 31, 2009 7:59 pm

He's back on the team roster and he wasn't on there when I checked the other day.

Hmm. He's not on the NHL.com roster... but then again, neither are Brookbank and Smith. I hope they did sign him because he's a great faceoff guy.

For what it's worth, he's listed as a Penguin on the NHLPA's website and has a 2009/2010 compensation of $650,000.

Probably not worth much... every other Pens free agent is still listed as a Pen, with their salary from last year listed as next year's salary.

In the past, NHLPA has been up on signings but you're probably right.

Yeah, NHLPA.com used to be better up to date. In years past, if a guy was a free agent, he was listed as unsigned. For whatever reason, this year they haven't updated that.

I haven't kept up with them this year to know the difference.

If they did, the Pens can assemble 2 4th lines.

I would really like him back, but what to do with five 4th liners?

Like ivan said above...Dupuis rumors can start up again...

I would move Dupuis even if we didn't re-sign Zigomanis. $1.4MM of cap space is huge this era. Who knows, maybe that's money they could sign a Tanguay or Bertuzzi (or someone better with)...

Still listed as UFA at nhlnumbers.com. I would think that the Pens would have announced his signing, I do not they have signed him.

Is ziggy signed? He is on the official site and other sites now. I like the move if true.

What other sites?
He is not on nhlnumbers, alleged signing not mentioned on the official Penguins site...

Honestly, his signing does not seem likely. We have an almost full roster as it is.
I do not see Shero going for it unless he moves someone to make room.
He needs to keep some wiggle room for potential trades/signings down the road
as well as for the WBS callups to be tried and developed at the NHL level.
Also, the team needs the core centers (esp. Geno and Staal) to get better
on face-offs. I am sure they will be challenged by the coaching staff during
the camp and beyond. There is not much reason to believe that in the longer
run we would have to rely on a 4th line faceoff specialist, unless he contributes
substantially to a few other facets of the game. I would be rather surprised
to see Zigomanis back.

Some investigative work by the crew over at Faceoff Factor may have more or less broken the re-signing of Mike Zigomanis. Keep your eyes peeled over the next few hours or so to see if the faceoff specialist is back on board for one more year. [Faceoff Factor]

Actually the FF article is based on this thread. :pop:

Not that I'm ripping FF, but their first line to that entry is...

Which is why it's so funny and obvious that "We Want the CUP" didn't even read it.

lol it's just something I noticed now it isn't 100% confirmed whether he's resigned or not. :P If it is true then I'm glad to help out.

I usually check the roster every day dunno why but just do and I was almost sure Zigo's name was off the roster so when I seen it on there I wasn't 100% sure so that's why I asked 8-)

Wikipedia has him back with the Pens, though the article linked to supposedly "confirm" the information is a PPG article from last year. Hrm.... And cap geek still has him as a free agent too.

I like Zigomanis, but if you need to sign him to take faceoffs when your spending over 21 million dollars (cap hit) for your top three centers, then somehing is wrong. Put the responsibility on the top three guys (especially Malkin and Staal) to improve, rather than spend an additional 500 to 600K for a faceoff guy when you are so close to the cap limit.

Kunitz-Crosby-Guerin
Fedotenko-Malkin-Dupuis/Tangradi/Caputi(if Duper is traded)
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Rupp-Zigomanis-Adams/Godard(Depending on the opponent)

IF Zigomanis takes the final faceoff and wins it, Lidstrom doesn't get the chance to score. Faceoffs are so important, I understand your top 3 centers point, but they're all lefties, you need a righty, and Adams didn't do a great job last year. Dupuis has to be on the block.
