Anyone know the law that Jane Orie cited in her little spiel at the rally on Saturday? It was about how it says that local politicians should get behind a proposal?

What document/law did she cite. I'm looking for the exact wording. I can't find it on the PPG or Trib, does anyone know what it was from?

That I don't know. I don't know if she mentioned where she got that from. You could always shoot her an email.

She said it came from the law that laid out the slots plan, but the way she rambles sure didn't sound like much of a legal document to me, unless they have 3rd graders write the laws in Harrisburg.

Oh wait, I've seen our legislators, I take that back.

It is House Bill 2330 or Act 71 of 2004. I think what she may be talking about may actually be in the statute. I'll find out for sure for you.

For those of us who couldn't make the rally can you tell us WHAT she said?

Then perhaps someone could cite the law for you.

Something to the effect that the decision on the applicant selection should be made according to the general feeling and temperature of the area in which the casino will be built. In other words, the gaming board SHOULD be listening to local leaders on what would be the best choice.

I'll try to get the exact quote. This is basically to rebut Rendell's proposition that local leaders shouldn't voice their opinions on the matter.

I think the part she quoted starts on page 116 and goes through 117. (Article 1506.)

That is not it. That has to do with pre-empting local zoning. What she ratled off sounded more like house records, or it may even be in the statute itself...I'll find out for sure, but it'll take me a bit.

I received this from Wayne Fontana and a similar reply from Sean Logan.

Thank you for communicating to me your thoughts on the need for a new
arena, the future of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Isle of Capri
Casino Plan.

It is important to the region, including the City of Pittsburgh, that we
retain the Penguins in the city. The Penguins have not asked for state
money; instead, their plan revolves around getting the slots license.
That being said, the State Senate has no vote in that decision, but its
members can certainly have an impact, as can you.

Just recently, I introduced legislation asking the Gaming Board to take
into consideration whether a casino plan includes funding for an arena
when making their decision regarding the slots license. Senators Costa
and Logan have signed on as co-sponsors on this bill. It is my hope
that this bill will be one more tool to ensure that the decision that
the Gaming Board makes is one that best for the City and region.

Together, I believe we can do what is necessary to keep the Penguins in
Pittsburgh. Again, thank you for your communication. I look forward to
hearing from you on this and other issues that are of importance to you.
