Sad story - Girl wanted to meet Kris Letang

Penn State Altoona cheerleader from Canonsburg dies in crash
Pittsburgh Post Gazette - Vivian Nereim - ‎6 hours ago‎
A fan who would have given anything to meet player Kris Letang, she had hoped to obtain a master's degree and become a school principal, said her friend .....

I ran across this story where a 19 girl was killed in a car accident yesterday, but the article mentioned that she really wanted to meet Kris Letang. I wonder if Kris will ever know that and if there would be anything he could do for the family. This probably happens more often than we know with other players as well, but this is the first time I actually saw it mentioned like this.

The article I read in the Washington Observer this morning said she was one of five girls in a car that got hit broadside by a Jaguar. They're attributing the accident to driver error. I have a kid in college at PSU Erie, I couldn't imagine getting that phone call. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

On a side note, I was born and raised in Altoona, and very familiar with this intersection. It is at the crest of the hill, where you enter the Juniata secton of town. Turning left, the seeing distance is not too far going over the hill. That being said, for a car going normal speed, you should have time to make the turn. Unless the driver of that car was simply not paying any attention (which, unfortunately, is a big possibility), the Jaguar had to have been flying. Speed limit is 35 there

And that is a sad story, but what can Kris Letang really do? The girl unfortunately (God bless her) passed away...I don't think anyone is expecting him to show up at the funeral.

I'd show up at the funeral if it was possible.

I went to college and played hockey with her older brother at PSU UP. I met Nicole on several occasions and she was a really sweet kid. I feel absolutely terrible for the Chauvet family. Nicole will truly be missed by a lot of people.

I'm sure if someone in the Penguins organization becomes aware of this, they will do what they feel appropriate, if anything at all. The Penguins are known for being a class act and kind gestures toward their fans.

I'm an alum of PSU altoona (2 years) and I agree with this partly, but I think the seeing distance is pretty decent there. I wouldn't consider it a "blind spot" or anything like that. From the sound of it though the Jag wasn't flying, the girl just didnt yield on green, but I do agree that the jag either had to be flying, or else the girl turned right infront of the Jag.

Never would have happened though if they never moved Martin's from near campus to all the way by 99/220 or just built a new one and had 2 stores instead of 1. That was the first thing that popped into my head when I read they were driving back from a "nearby" grocery store. Cuz if you were there when they moved the store you'd know it isn't "nearby" anymore.

FYI, I think I drove past the accident site today. I am never out that way, but I was out there on business and I saw the guard rail was covered in Penguins stuff. Sad to see it.

Not even that far, maybe a mile and half. It's right at the bottom of the hill from my mom's apartment.

I live about 15 miles north of Altoona and work in Altoona. I spent two years at the Altoona Campus. It really hits home since it happen in this town. The accident has received a lot of local coverage. I don't want to imagine what it's like to lose a child. My son is going to the Altoona Campus next year...

How about we focus on the loss of a fellow Pens fan, and not worry about who needs to inform whom.

This isn't a debate.

That's what some of us who live in the area are trying to do. The story has been all over the local news and since I'm a Pens fan who has children, it really hits home. I've driven through that intersetion hundreds of times without a thought, now it will be a source of morning due to the loss of not only a fellow Pens fan, but a young woman who had her whole life in front of her. That is my focus, if some of us are long-winded in the process....oh well...
