Jeering Brodeur?

Postby Lorneadoon on Mon Dec 21, 2009 1:23 am

This is a debate that drew an almost even response from about 12 of die hards (I agreed to post the question). Pick your favorite number and give a brief reason why.

1. Pens fans start cheering SAWWWW-CHUKKKKK before the Pens score.

2. Pens fans start cheering SAWWWW-CHUKKKKK after the Pens score.

3. Cheering SAWWWW-CHUKKKKK is classless. Brodeur deserves respect.

4. Cheering SAWWWW-CHUKKKKK is too hip for the room.

3. Why be like Filthy fans and how they treat Crosby?

I agree with you, Psychlone, I didn't boo Jagr or Hossa, but I have to admit I did boo Adam Graves after his slash on 66. And I am guilty as charged in leading section D-25 in the "Nineteen - Forty" cheer for the Rangers.

I understand why philly fans resent crosby. hes young, he's good, and he is a polarizing figure.

I dont understand why anyone would taunt marty broduer about terry sawchuk. Maybe we should all taunt fatso?

Brodeur is possibly the best goalie to play the game. Respect him.

everyone should root FOR the PENS. taunting or jeering marty would be a philly move and it would suggest nothing but resentment and jealousy. let philly keep the honor of "zero class" to themselves.

This. :thumb: And if anything you wouldn't say Sawchuk. You'd say Roy. Roy has 4 Cups. If he had played with New Jersey he would have just as many easy 20-save shutouts. Also, Brodeur lost Game 7 of the 2001 Finals to Roy. But Brodeur is right up there. If he won another Cup, he'd surpass Roy as the best goalie of all time in my book.

Brodeur's numbers are a product of a system. Valiquette could post shutouts in that system. Brodeur is great, but not the legend that he is made out to be. Put him in the league circa 1987, you'd get completely different results IMO.

THe Flyers might have tasteless fans, but at least Philly will play a solid in-your-face hockey game and challenge its opponents rather than skating backwards in circles and never forechecking and wait for a puck to go off of an ankle and win games on the cheat based on loopholes in the rules.

I have no respect for Brodeur, Lemaire, or fat boy Lou.

One person's "solid in-your-face hockey" is another's goonery to the point of distraction. I prefer my team to play neither that nor the trap.

That being said, since 1975, Devils have 3 cups, the Flyers' brand of "solid in-your-face hockey" 0.

And I'll take Lamoriello over Bobby Clarke any day.

As for the OP, let's leave the jeering for someone else. If 4 basically means we're better than that, then I choose 4.

i don't see any reason for the jeering... if he happens to shut out the pens tonight, the fans should give him a standing ovation. If we score tonight, then leave it be at that. Leave the classless jeering for another team's fanbase.

How can one cheer sawchuck before the pens score? Will this not just lead to cheering the whole game? Unless you can tell the future and we should have a different conversation...

When/if the Pens score I'd jump up and celebrate. Then I'd sit back down and continue enjoying the rest of the game.

we ***** and complain about how classless Philly fans are, so you want us to taunt another teams player? Might as well change your colors to orange and black then bro..

Marty Brodeur is one of the best players ever. If you understand the game enough and have enough respect for the game then you would acknowledge what he is about to do and give him a standing ovation if/when he does get his shutout. until then, sit back down in your chair, put your Flyers jersey back on and watch the game

I agree that 99.9% of players should never be "jeered" or taunted.

Occasionally, players like Avery or Hartnell are an exception to that.

I have jeered NFL players at games, but only after they did some ridiculous celebration or taunted the Steelers. If Ovechkin scored a goal at Mellon and then went into his full wind-up and Lord of the Dance routine, I'd jeer him for showing up my home team.

Players who have been good for the game (LIKE HALL OF FAMERS FOR EXAMPLE) don't deserve that treatment. That's why I never have, nor ever will, boo Jagr.

4. I would venture that 3 of 5 fans entering the game would not know who Terry Sawchuk even is/was.

However... Booing amd mocking and jeering the other team is part of the "home field advantage". It should be expected and accepted.

The only taunting will be in the second period, when a guy in E28 yells "hey brodeur! You're a sieve!" and everyone answers "and you know it!"

I got to agree here, Brodeur is one of the best goalies ever, if he does it against us he deserve a standing ovation. Its like watching an opposing pitcher pitch a perfect game in baseball against your favorite team at home, you have to cheer that guy.

I was at the Giants-Patriots game a few years ago when the Pats went 16-0 in the regular season, i actually cheered for the pats when they won and when brady and moss set their records. I am a jets fan, you don't see history everyday so when you witness it, you have to cheer it, its what being a sports fan is all about.

The Devils are a very annoying team. We are having one of the best seasons we ever had but once again...they are technically ahead of us in the standings.

They really do not have much talent, but they just will not go away.
The one thing which makes it tough to really hate them is that I believe the kept Philly from winning the cup, or at least making it there, twice in 1995 and 2000.

I hope the pens answer this question with many goals which will give Marty time to rest and look over the Igloo for the last time~ who knows about spring play-offs.

Best way to ruin Brodeur's night is to chase him from the net, Pens 8, Devils 2.

I have no problems booing anyone who is wearing another team's jersey. That doesn't mean I don't respect the player and what they've done.
