It is not illegal to place bets with a bookie. The illegality comes if you don't declare your winnings and then there are tax evasion consequences. Considering this was a 40 day investigation per the ABC 6 story it is highly unlikely any of this activity took place prior to 2005, so it is highly unlikely that any of the involved bettors would be in a position to have evaded taxation on any winnings they accumulated.

This article was updated at 4:42 today, and mentions Roenick but not Recchi. Hopefully the Action News information was wrong and NBC has the right info. I'm not much of a fan of Roenick so I don't care if he's implicated.

The operation was 40 days long, per philly.com, the enterprise had been going on as much as 5 years. The investigation isn't over yet.

None of the articles I could find seem to indicate Recchi. But let's not forget Recchi is not the only former Flyer on this team - Leclair also would have the potential of being mixed up in this.

Tocchet played with two current NHL owners. I don't think he was taking bets for Ed Snider, makes sense that it would be Gretz, but I wouldn't rule the other guy out either.

This news of the gambling operation is huge, and you haven't seen anything yet.

I've always subscribed to the 'cockroach theory' on matters like this... if you see one, there's a hundred more lurking about.

You can bet that Gov Rendell will nake sure the PA autorities are working overtime helping out the NJ and Feds on this one. If he can tie even one current pPens player or employee it'll give him a reason to say something along the lines of "We felt it was in the best interest of the community to ensure that there was no linkage to professional sports teams, individuals connected with professional sports teams, and/or venure for Professional sports in our awarding of the Slots license - We wanted to make sure we avoided even the appearance of improprioty".

He maintains that he wasn't betting through or 'proxied by' Janet Jones, but who knows? He also said he didn't know the pre-Game skate before the All-Star game in the 'burgh, was mandatory either right?

None yet. Gretz via proxy by his wife seems plausible. Not much attention has been paid to the TSN report that 5 cities are involved including Phoenix, Boston, & St. Paul.

SAl made the point that even if these NHL associate bettors
did not bet on hockey they were making the bets illegally and
