It is not illegal to place bets with a bookie. The illegality comes if you don't declare your winnings and then there are tax evasion consequences. Considering this was a 40 day investigation per the ABC 6 story it is highly unlikely any of this activity took place prior to 2005, so it is highly unlikely that any of the involved bettors would be in a position to have evaded taxation on any winnings they accumulated.

Well, that depends on evidence found, records of transactions...

I don't think should be illegal or immoral, but those 12 guys will be named.

2005 federal/state taxes aren't due until 4/15/06. I guess it is possible there could be quarterly local taxes due or possibly estimated quarterly federal taxes due, but given the fact nobody needs to have filed an actual 2005 tax return yet it is unlikely there was any evasion involved.

This article was updated at 4:42 today, and mentions Roenick but not Recchi. Hopefully the Action News information was wrong and NBC has the right info. I'm not much of a fan of Roenick so I don't care if he's implicated.

The operation was 40 days long, per philly.com, the enterprise had been going on as much as 5 years. The investigation isn't over yet.

None of the articles I could find seem to indicate Recchi. But let's not forget Recchi is not the only former Flyer on this team - Leclair also would have the potential of being mixed up in this.

People who gamble are the ultimate evil in society, they are worse than child molesters.............seriously if your not betting on your teams games than what's the big deal? The stuff Governor Pigbreath is purportedly doing is just like betting on his own team if you really think about it. ARREST HIM!!!!!!

I heard Modano, Shanny, Roenick, Tkachuk, and yes even Jarda's name thrown around.

I'll post the link to it once the board comes back up.

Yep, Jarda I believe is the Czech version of Jaromir, and was used by some on the old board.

Not sure why, but I still use it.

I go away for ten days and all H*ll breaks loose.

LGP board changes....
Gambling charges against current NHL figures...
Gretz hiding behind Janets Skirt... (What you think those weren't *his* bets?)

Ahhh, but one thing is consistant... The Pens still can't win a game.

This news of the gambling operation is huge, and you haven't seen anything yet.

I've always subscribed to the 'cockroach theory' on matters like this... if you see one, there's a hundred more lurking about.

You can bet that Gov Rendell will nake sure the PA autorities are working overtime helping out the NJ and Feds on this one. If he can tie even one current pPens player or employee it'll give him a reason to say something along the lines of "We felt it was in the best interest of the community to ensure that there was no linkage to professional sports teams, individuals connected with professional sports teams, and/or venure for Professional sports in our awarding of the Slots license - We wanted to make sure we avoided even the appearance of improprioty".

Now for my 'Oliver Stone conspiracy theory moment':

Remember how everyone was wondering what the personal reasons were that Ziggy Palffy sited for leaving a few weeks ago?

I wonder if he may have been approached by investigators about being involved as a minor player?

Ah, maybe that's not fair, but it sure would answer the question as to why he really retired.

Has LeClair, Recchi, and Roenick (he has denied) involved as bettors.

Maybe I'm reading into something that's just not there...

Postby ExPatriatePen on Wed Feb 08, 2006 3:07 pm

But I'm thinking it has to be gretz, he's a minority owner with the group that owns the Yotes as well as being the Yotes coach right?

He maintains that he wasn't betting through or 'proxied by' Janet Jones, but who knows? He also said he didn't know the pre-Game skate before the All-Star game in the 'burgh, was mandatory either right? :?

None yet. Gretz via proxy by his wife seems plausible. Not much attention has been paid to the TSN report that 5 cities are involved including Phoenix, Boston, & St. Paul.

heard this reporter talking with dan patrick about
operation slapshot.
Sal- just saw him at the superbowl coverage, said R Tocchet
has not yet met with Gary Bettman.
SAl made the point that even if these NHL associate bettors
did not bet on hockey they were making the bets illegally and
therefore broke a law in the NHL CBA. Yes, ADMIN, we need
the new CBA.
Sal was shocked at Wayne's repsonse to wife's involvement.
Said, Janet Gretzky bets the NFL. If through Tocchet , again
illegally.

Well now we know Recchi and LeClair are retaining a lawyer. Good for them.

Didn't WIP learn from the Craig Carton incident?
