CEC Ice

Postby Jasmine on Tue Sep 21, 2010 9:30 am

When the Pens opened camp, the CEC ice was not good with speculation that it was due to a concert just days before. This is a "state-of-the-art" building in which perfect ice should be the major priority, no? Should we be worring about this?

I'm worried about it. The Pens aren't used to playing on garbage ice.

The ice is less than a week old. There were concerts 2 nights in a row. The temperature and humidity has been going up and down every day in the past week. The ice won't be great. It'll probably never be great. Places like Edmonton and Calgary with their so called "great ice" don't have the weather we have in Pittsburgh, nor will they have the amount of events the CEC will be hosting.

Maki Lang always said players loved to play in Edomonton since their ice was just like glass. i wonder what made it so good. Beside the fact its always 20 below out there.

Yes we are in a new 300 million dollar arena, but its going to take the ice crew guys a little while to see how concerts/weather affects the ice sheet when its covered and not covered, etc. etc.

Its not simply they make the ice and they let it sit, they are constantly adjusting the temperature of the cooling pipers underneath the ice to keep the ice at the perfect temp. They could have easily not had it cold enough to account for the humidity from the concert, add into the fact the equipment is new, everything takes sometime to get used to.

I have no doubt that we will have some great ice once all the kinks get worked out and the guys learn the subtle nuances of the ice in the new building.

It's the price you pay for a multi-functional arena that can host a bunch of other shows, concerts, etc. Would you rather drive to State College or Cleveland to see big acts?

The Bryce Jordan Center draws some big acts. My point is that our hockey arena also has to double up as a major entertainment venue to bring in top musical acts. If we don't have a suitable arena that they can perform in, they won't come to Pittsburgh. And no, the Star Lake Amphitheater is not suitable for all acts.

No matter how modern the technology, there are always going to be challenges in putting together an ice surface because you're artificially creating and maintaining ice in an environment where it shouldn't exist. You're dealing with other events that are simply a reality for the viability of the arena being constructed in the first place. There are weather issues - there definitely isn't supposed to be ice when it's hot and humid.

As others have mentioned, Edmonton has pristine ice because it's extremely cold there. That's a no brainer. I just looked at the weather right now in Edmonton and it's 45 degrees. Naturally they're going to have an easier time maintaining a good ice surface there.

Building a new arena wasn't about getting the Pens a great ice surface. It was about increasing revenue.

So none then? Because the only national events at the Bryce Jordan center besides PSU basketball between now and the end of the year are Dane Cook and the Eagles.

Guess where Dane Cook is 6 nights before State College??

And the Eagles 3 nights before??

lol.........it seems everyone missed my point.

I said that if Pittsburgh didn't have a large-scale indoor concert venue like the Mellon and now the CEC, large acts wouldn't even stop in Pittsburgh. Instead, they would go to other venues like State College/Cleveland/Philly etc. It wasn't meant to turn into a Penn State vs. Pitt pissing contest
