List of players that wore As for the Pens (in progress)

Postby relantel on Thu Mar 10, 2011 1:31 pm

I was inspired by the photo of Trots in the MN thread, where it showed him wearing the C, a practice common then when the named Captain was injured:

pronovost19 wrote:Image

My memory of said case was after the Graves incident in the 92 playoffs. I also recalled Steve McKenna wearing the C once prior to the lockout. I began to wonder if there had been such a list compiled, and could not come across one. So I began by culling the NHL.com RO sheets for the current season, and took those game by game back as far as such pages existed, which appears to be mid-January 2006 - First sheet is 1-19-06; last game w/o sheet is 1-16-06. I suspect those sheets existed before that point, but they were not published online. Perhaps a source exists out there for them? By comparison, the GS, ES, FO & PL pages go back a number of seasons older.

I figured while I was notating Cs, might as well compile the As at the same time, adding each to a game specific entry in my existing excel file. Since each season is on a separate sheet but formatted the same, the formulas to count for me only need to change the sheet name and not the range. (For let's face it, I was not going to be counting manually). We know since the lockout, the Pens have not had a fill-in C, but have used 3 As, when the named Captain was out. Since the NHL's accessible data doesn't get us out of that era, the prime motivator for this project is still yet on the horizon. In the meantime, figured I'd share the aggregate results of the As so far:

Times wearing A, Regular season, from mid-Jan 06 to present:
Code: Select all
Gonchar   259
Malkin    152
Recchi    117
Crosby    113
Orpik      99
Staal      47
Malone     36
Sydor      35
Roberts    29
Melichar   19
Kunitz     18
Cooke      18
Sykora     14
Whitney    14
Scuderi    12
Gill       12
LeClair    11
Adams      10
Guerin      9
None ID'd   9
Eaton       4
Talbot      3
Martin      2
None        1

(For Reference, Crosby has worn C 253 times during that same timeframe)

A's, Playoffs, 2007-2010 (four seasons worth):

Code: Select all
Gonchar   60
Malkin    37
Roberts   11
Malone     9
Recchi     5
Crosby     5
Orpik      2

C - Crosby 57 (2007 Ottawa series was played with 3 As)

Naturally, anyone who has an idea of where to look that I am overlooking, holler at me.

They had the rotating "A" per month, then Gonchar was out. I'm almost positive I remember Gill / Scuds got it together one month (Cause i remember thinking it was an odd pairing for it)

Scuderi had it for 12 games - as did Gill - during 2008-2009. They were the same 12 games. He's on the list  :pop:

Steve McKenna wore the C for the Hockey Fights Cancer Night back in the day, the jerseys were then auctioned off on NHL.COM

I've been looking for a good thread to bring up this Barnaby tweet. Since Morozov disgraced the Penguins alternate Captaincy, it is an appropriate thread:

http://twitter.com/MattBarnabyESPN/stat ... 8059632641

We played philly one night and morozov begged me not 2!!RT @Barfly77: When did you ever refrain from waking up the other team? lol

I've accumulated some pre-Roster sheet data from old game video here and there but it is a drop in the bucket compared to number of games.

That he did.

I have a slew of games on VHS tape stored somewhere in the house, most from the 90s, but haven't yet found the time to do it. Culled others from the 91 & 92 playoff tapes, and some season highlight videos online for other seasons, and even some photographs taken at games we were at. Even with all those, it is still a drop in the hat. The AP game recaps/boxscores that are in Admin's game database don't contain this data, and although online scoresheets on nhl.com started sometime around 97 or 98, but it was not the full spread of sheets we see today - just the GS and ES pages. The RO pages appeared in January 2006. I had sent an inquiry to the Penguins themselves when I started compiling these earlier in the year but got no response. (trying to figure out if those Roster sheets existed in hard copy either with the league or team) Might need to find a better contact I guess...

A's list through end of last season (11-12):

Code: Select all
Gonchar   259
Malkin    227
Orpik     168
Recchi    117
Crosby    113
Staal     111
Kunitz     63
Malone     36
Sydor      35
Roberts    29
Cooke      22
Melichar   19
Sykora     14
Whitney    14
Adams      12
Scuderi    12
Gill       12
LeClair    11
Guerin      9
None ID'd   9
Eaton       4
Talbot      3
Martin      9
None        2

Crosby wore the C 275 times during that span (January 06 to end of 11/12 season)

Never did get a reply from several inquires to the team itself on this, but then again, it's been 18 months since my last attempt.

Off the top of my head:

Les Binkley first captain

No captains the first few years of the 1970s

Pronovost (1977-ish), Kindrachuk (late '70s), and Francis (mid-'90s) wore the C

I think Apps wore an A in his last season (don't think the Pens had alternates in mid-70s)

Hillier, Errey, Coffey, Francis, Stevens all have worn the A; I want to say that Larry Murphy did, too, but I'm not sure

I think Kovalev wore the A

I'm pretty sure Ryan Whitney wore the A

Jagr's worn C and A

Here's some stuff for you: http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/PIT/captains.html

Dish, thanks. I've been trying to map game by game who wore what - started with trying to itemize one-off Cs (Like McKenna) or fill ins (such as Trottier or Coffey) that weren't the named captain. By in large, the named Captain is relatively easy, since one assumes the named captain wore every game he played for the given season. This gives us 225 for Jagr and 126 for Francis, and 446 for Lemieux dating to the beginning of the 90-91 season (that's as far as I had noted individual games here and there). The coded list above was just from mid-2005/2006 season through 2011-2012, based on the RO game roster scoresheets published.

Yes, Morozov wore the A in the 2003-04 season. Draftnik's reminder sent me to this:

I can't help watching this every so often, and I struggle to fight back tears every blessed time.

What is the idea behind not having any player wear the C when the normal captain is out (even for a game or two)?

Sewing expenses?

I liked that Trottier got it when Lemieux was out. It shows that there are leaders on the team in addition to the current captain. I would think that it boosts morale.

That move by Morozov, when he flashed the logo, is legendary. I don't care what Draftnik or anyone says. Alexei Morozov will always be a Pittsburgh Penguin to me.
