My memory of said case was after the Graves incident in the 92 playoffs. I also recalled Steve McKenna wearing the C once prior to the lockout. I began to wonder if there had been such a list compiled, and could not come across one. So I began by culling the NHL.com RO sheets for the current season, and took those game by game back as far as such pages existed, which appears to be mid-January 2006 - First sheet is 1-19-06; last game w/o sheet is 1-16-06. I suspect those sheets existed before that point, but they were not published online. Perhaps a source exists out there for them? By comparison, the GS, ES, FO & PL pages go back a number of seasons older.
I figured while I was notating Cs, might as well compile the As at the same time, adding each to a game specific entry in my existing excel file. Since each season is on a separate sheet but formatted the same, the formulas to count for me only need to change the sheet name and not the range. (For let's face it, I was not going to be counting manually). We know since the lockout, the Pens have not had a fill-in C, but have used 3 As, when the named Captain was out. Since the NHL's accessible data doesn't get us out of that era, the prime motivator for this project is still yet on the horizon. In the meantime, figured I'd share the aggregate results of the As so far:
Times wearing A, Regular season, from mid-Jan 06 to present:
- Code: Select all
Gonchar 259
Malkin 152
Recchi 117
Crosby 113
Orpik 99
Staal 47
Malone 36
Sydor 35
Roberts 29
Melichar 19
Kunitz 18
Cooke 18
Sykora 14
Whitney 14
Scuderi 12
Gill 12
LeClair 11
Adams 10
Guerin 9
None ID'd 9
Eaton 4
Talbot 3
Martin 2
None 1
(For Reference, Crosby has worn C 253 times during that same timeframe)
A's, Playoffs, 2007-2010 (four seasons worth):
- Code: Select all
Gonchar 60
Malkin 37
Roberts 11
Malone 9
Recchi 5
Crosby 5
Orpik 2
C - Crosby 57 (2007 Ottawa series was played with 3 As)
Naturally, anyone who has an idea of where to look that I am overlooking, holler at me.
