Really. The Gilles taunt was on a completely different level. Can we stop comparing the two. Asham had a fight with an unfortunate end for snoopy, this wasnt premeditated revenge followed with in the face taunting.

I guess I'm from a different generation of Pens' fans. It's not so much that Asham was "wrong" but I totally understand why Caps fans would be upset.

Mario or Ronnie Francis would not have made gestures while a player lay injured on the ice. I just think Penguins hockey is a class above that type of stuff. Bottom line.

Mario or Francis would also not have tried to fight Beagle for what he did. It's a different game, with different styles.

At the same time, of course you have to understand why the Caps fans are upset. I'd despise it if someone knocked out Vitale or... Vitale (I can't think of anyone else on the Pens right now that's similar) and then did that. It was a rivalry game, though, and Asham was protecting Letang. Pretty sure all sides can be understood.

The key is that Asham said it was wrong and apologized. He also did not see how badly Beagle was injured until after the gesture; the stick-tapping while in the box is the reverse of that.

And along a different line, is Beagle fighting with his visor on still considered low / classless, or is that no longer in effect due to the fact that a lot more players wear visors now? One of the reasons that Asham had to constantly aim for the jaw was because of the visor in the first place.

OK. Jay Caufield or Randy Cunneyworth would not have made that type of gesture. Fighting is part of hockey, taunging is not, and Shanahan will agree with me, as does the NFL. If a pitcher is taunted in MLB they throw a fastball at the guy the next time. It violates a code the players have. This is not WWF.

If the Pens keep playing like this, they are fine. Great effort, superior system and talent. Johnson was just average and Vokoun was outstanding, that was the difference. Orpik, Crosby... we'd have destroyed them tonight.

This is a team who defended a player who is the reason Crosby still isnt playing and put his career and our franchise in jeopardy, and we're gonna feel sorry because Asham did a 'nighty night" gesture after he knocked a guy out in a toe to toe fight? Some of you are trying way to hard to be objective. That dope got what he wanted and I dont think a single one of those ***** thought twice about Ovy's knee on Gonchar or Stekals hit on Crosby.

You can't compare the NHL to MLB or the NFL because they don't allow fighting. Case closed.

Throwing a fastball at someone's head is not the same as knocking someone out (who deserved it), and then celebrating it. Get a grip.

I guess I view a taunt as a more in the face thing. This was obviously towards the crowd. Crucify me for this if ya feel like but I view it on the same level as a sack celebration. Im sure there's been a time or two where a guy celebrated his play while a qb was hurt. Did they apologize?

To clarify, a fastball to one's head is premeditated, and a celebration from a fight is adrenaline based.

Adrenaline got the best of him while he was sticking up for a teammate. I understand Caps fans being mad, but Asham did the right thing by tapping the stick right away and apologizing at his earliest opportunity. Case closed.
