My guesses were in the OV thread in NPR.

Z gets a $2500 fine
AO should be 3. Subtract 3 because he's AO, but add in 2 of those because of his non-elite status this year, so he doesn't have as much attention on him. Subtract 2 for Shanny idiocy and we're at 0. Add 1 because it was on NBC and we get 1... 1 game.

I like this new discipline idea. Bringing in both the defendant and prosecution. :D

Maury should host.

This did not get a suspension (I hate the Det homerism in this clip):

That hit on Hendricks was an absolute joke. He was FLYING down the boards and is obviously trying to beat Michalek behind the net. Z was going hard to cut him off, and Hendricks stops and turns his back at the last second. At game speed, that was Hendricks fault, because he also dips down as a result of stopping.

That is a play the league should be telling the offensive player to stop making. It is a joke that players believe that is a safe play for them. They are putting themselves in that position on purpose.

I really don't see how Z gets a suspension, just a fine. His elbow was naturally at his side, the only reason it contacted his head was because the guy leaned over and put himself in an awkward position.

should be just a fine for Z since he's not a repeat offender. Shannahan will probably give him a game because... who the heck knows

OV should get 3 or 5 but will only get 1 because... who the heck knows

Exactly. If he is suspended that is a joke. He shouldn't even be fined. They should be fining Hendricks for putting himself in that position.

The directive should be, you put yourself in harms way like that as a result of your offensive decision, you are on your own. The hitting from behind is supposed to be for guys who are unaware - not guys who try to make a play they are not capable of and get caught.

AO was suspended for 2 previously right? I'll stick with 4 for him.

I agree with the Z factor. I think he should be fined and not suspended. He's not that type of player. Much like Zetterberg in the clip above.

Or Rupp on Staal, etc.

The one hiccup with AO is that his last discipline is over 18 months out, which has some bearing (although I don't fully understand how much).

Yeah, I have been saying this for years. Probably the one of the few things I agree with Don Cherry on.

There should be a 2 minute penalty for being a moron. If you lean forward with and you are staring at the dasher board, you're guilty of being a moron and while you don't deserve to get hurt, its should be accepted.

I thought I read somewhere that the 18 month rule involves money or something.

I guess the 18 month rule means Bertuzzi can bulldog someone in the ice again?

I have no idea. Just saying I know there is something with 18 months.

EDIT: I believe the new CBA wiped Bert's record clean though.

If there is a 18 month rule, Matt only has about 8 months to go before his record is wiped clean. lol

That was the right call on the ice, but it should end there. Not every big hit should lead to a suspension.

Ovechkin's was especially vicious, however. He should get something.

This is the typical false equivalence you normally expect from the NHL. Analogous to an even-up call. Those hits were nothing alike (in terms of being a suspendable (sic) offense).

Sort of what I was thinking... while the two hits could not be farther from similar. When Z hit Hendricks, he got a penalty for a hit on a guy that put himself in a vulnerable position. 2 minutes was fair, 5 would have been ok if Hendricks was injured.

AO has been suspended or fined for everything from slew footing to boarding. Hard to argue for a repeat offender. This wasn't even a hockey play. The puck was gone, Z pulled up to avoid the hit, and AO left his feet to hit his head. Atrocious, and just the sort of hit the NHL is trying to prohibit.

I have an even bigger fear that Ovechkin will get away with the hit, yet again, and Michalek will get punished. Michalek does deserve some supplemental discipline for his elbow to the head of Hendrick, but it's actually the rare time that Michalek even hits. Hitting to hurt is not his game, where Ovechkin hits without any regard or respect for any other players, and for the most part gets away with it because he's Ovechkin.

Can't get the video for some reason this morning. Was Z's head really the principal point of contact? I only saw it live yesterday, and I thought it looked 100% like a charge, but it seemed shoulder to shoulder at the game.

Yea, why is *everything* subject to "supplemental discipline" nowadays? Why can't on-ice discipline be enough? Seems like the flaw is the on-ice officiating...

you can't really believe that both hits should be punished evenly

in addition to ovechkin's hit being...well...worse, he's also a repeat offender
