Tonight's opponent

Postby The Snapshot on Tue Jan 24, 2012 12:17 am

I just finished watching the Wings defeat the Blues 3-1 in Detroit. The Blues now have to travel home and play on less than 24 hour turnaround. That is the good news.

The bad news.....this team is absolutely filthy. They are big and strong, but they literally wrestle more than they play hockey. Detroit did a good job of staying composed, but just like the game when we played them somehow the refs let everything go. In the last half of the third period, they could have had 15 interference, hooking, holding or roughing penalties. It is amazing, and Hitchcock just stands there with his fat arms folded across his fat belly looking like a proud father.

My concern is what his gameplan will be with Malkin dominating as he is. I guarantee you they will not allow Malkin to skate as freely as he has been, having watched this abomination of hockey tonight.

Blues are 25-1-2 in their last 28 home games with David Perron in the lineup.

A good test for the penguins, especially at the break. They can let it all out.

We'll see how long hitchock lasts in st. louis. I didn't like his over top the reaction to Sid, back in November. Like he was his long-lost uncle, this after his 2005 flyer history.

It would be a nice surprise to see the Pens play a strong game against a trapping opponent. This will be the best test they will face all season in that regard. Hopefully they buck the trend of their historic performance against such teams under DB.

Mac is back up. That may be part of the answer to my question. David Backes is a beast, but he is also extremely ill-humored. Mac can't play against Backes or many of the other Blues wrestlers, but maybe little ****s like Perron and DaGostino will stop with the hacking and whacking......doubt it though.

I am telling you now this will be a war on skates if we want to win this game. This team had a siege mentality last night against the Wings. Of course that was a division game for the 1st spot, so hopefully they are tired and have less intensity.

Which is why he's the player not currently on the pens roster who I most want to be on the pens roster.

We're going to let them get the puck deep and their going to grind us down here, eh? 0-5 turtle the first time out... Kuni, you ready for that guy to get on you? Good, cuz you're starting."

They are legit like the old Devils were legit. They have just enough speed to take advantage of mistakes, yet want the game to played in Singlets and at a snail's pace. I thought this was supposed to be illegal in the "new" NHL, but somehow they consistently get away with holding and obstructing all over the ice.

They even make it hard to tell who is holding who when the opponent struggles. They are masters. The way I can tell is that when I watch their opponents play other teams, they are not holding all over the ice - so it is clearly the Blues initiating. The other way I can tell it's them is to see Hitchcock behind the bench.

One of the ruiners of Hockey.

I actually don't know much about the blues except John Davidson was IMO the best color commentator I have ever heard. As much as I have hated the Rangers over the years, they have always had respectable, knowledgable and balanced commentators. Rosen/J.D. were great.

He isn't, Fleury for Life.

Also, MacIntyre didn't skate on a regular line, so he might not be playing either.

Looked to me like they had a tough time generating a lot of offense against the Red Wings. The Pens can play a solid defensive game. If we do that, we should be able to get a goal or two based solely on the will of Malkin.

I hope.

A few notes here:

Blues play a traditional 1-2-2 with the D posted extremely deep in the neutral zone. Not a lot of room. They make retrieving pucks easier on their defensemen by having them so deep.

They pressure a lot in the neutral zone but play strict man to man in the defensive zone with the wings responsible for assisting in the boards. Lots of room at the point. Pens need to come with speed and work the puck high so that Malkin can get loose off his man down low.

And yes, as Snapper said, they are very, very dirty.

I'm pumped for this game....The game last year in St. Louis(combined with the Nashville game right before/after?) were two of my favorite Pens games last season.
