You get the sense that things are a little more complicated here for the Pens...they know the country is watching, they know it's a big game and a lot of guys want to make big time impacts and it's really effecting our entries...sloppy neutral zone play, a lot of guys trying to make softer, slicker play to exit the zone...not content to clear, they want to start the rush...they want to make the play, they want to dish to Malkin or Crosby for the pretty goal...
Malkin is already flustered, so who knows, he might just do whatever he feels like the rest of the game...he missed a flying hip check on a fairly slow Brian Boyle which led to a 2 on 1...
The guy that's not playing to the hype and is playing the right way, the simple way, Jordan Staal...he's entering the zone effectively, he's not passing off chances, he's getting back in the right spots...he's playing the game the right way and I bet you we see a lot of him tonight out of necessity...his defensive zone start % will go up and his offensive zone finish will go up too because he gets it and he's a cool competitor - the hype doesn't get to him.
Bylsma needs to remind his guys what the game plan is and how to be more effective in the neutral zone...understanding what passes can open what entry points against this fairly defensive team. Hopefully this is already on the books, but which defenseman's side to attack in which situation...Crosby should attack Bickel (41) because of his inability to skate very well and I don't think he can cut very well to his right...Staal should attack Stralman (34) because of his laissez-faire style and overall weakness, Staal can go through him...Evgeni Malkin intimidates an otherwise very good defensive defenseman in Ryan McDonagh (27) and forces a lot of turnovers against him. Hopefully the guys on the bench are identifying these things. Remind Orpik how old he is...remind Kennedy what got him to this level...remind Paul Martin that this is a team that you should have full-fledged hatred for for his entire career, play like you mean it and stop trying to be a third linesman, play the game...
It's a cliche thing to say, but if I'm the coach of this team, I'm really simplifying things for these guys, relaxing them and getting them focused as if this was any other game...which sounds counterintuitive, but it's the "any other games" where the Pens are focused, directed and straightforward...it's these "uh oh, there's more eyes on us...let's give'em something" games that worry me...I thought we'd be ok because we weren't at home, but still, it has gotten into the minds of a lot of players...
