I posted this in another thread...but since I'm the new GM, I'm blowing things up Paul Holmgren style just to let everyone know who the boss is around here (except for you Mario, sir)...

I approach STL with a trade. They have tons of size and grit, but little top-end skill, plus they have a pretty deep system of defensemen. I offer them Malkin (yeah, that's right) along with Brian Strait and a pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, in exchange for TJ Oshie, Alex Pietrangelo, and (prospect) Jaden Schwartz.

Next I approach Brooks Orpik and tell him just how much he smells of BO and how he needs to move on. I tell him he better not name Winnipeg in his alotted 8-teams that he will not accept a trade to. Then I contact Winnipeg (who is in need of defensive defensemen...even if they smell) and offer them Orpik and Kennedy in exchange for Blake Wheeler.

My final trade is with Coloroado, who has all of three (3) defensemen signed for next year and will be about $48,000,000 under the cap. I offer them Paul Martin (after, again, forcing Paul to NOT name Colorado!...damn these NTC's are tricky!) for a second round pick in either 2012, or 2013.

My RFA's are all signed quickly because I'm a pleasure to negotiate with; Oshie (4 years, $13,000,000), Niskanen (2 years, $4,000,000), Tangradi (2 years, $1,500,000), and O'Reilly (1 year, $750,000...but he'll be waived to WB/S in camp).

On July 1st I strike quick with my two main UFA targets; Suter (6 years, $35,000,000) and Kelly (2 years, $6,750,000). Later that day I sign Josh Harding to a two year deal worth $3,000,000 because it's time we have a competent backup who can actually play in 30 games. A few days roll by (as I smoke my self-satisfaction cigars) and then I sign Jordin Tootoo to a three year deal for $4,000,000. Later in the summer I realize that Craig Adams passed away sometime in February, and I re-sign Richard Park for one year and $700,000.

In October, my coach's lineup looks like this...

2012-13 Pens Salary = exactly $63,345,500. Which means we have PLENTY of room to re-sign ALL of Crosby, Staal, Letang, Pietrangelo, and even Cooke and Dupuis...if they earn it.

In May of 2013, I'm nominated for the GM of the Year Award, just as the pens advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.

blake wheeler? eh. orpik has more value than that, and aside from this year's unusual assists total, wheeler basically puts up the same PPG as kennedy (and i'd bet he's seen more meaningful PP time over his career). maybe he's a dynamo penalty killer or something, but we could do better.

Are concerned, they are going to get paid and it won't be anything under or even at 6M. GMs look at those guys as franchise pieces to build around not complementary pieces to over power a team. In any scenario where one of them is brought here the Pens surely lose Letang in his next contract and Staal at the trade deadline.

Just wait and see when Detroit signs Suter this July for $5,500,000...or at most $6,000,000. Parise will come in around $7,000,000 or so, and NSH will re-sign Weber to somewhere around $8,000,000.

My first move as GM would be sit Geno and Letang down for a chat about getting into after the whistle BS with the Zac Rinaldo's of the NHL. Knock it off, idiots.

Second, I just don't see why Sid and Neal aren't together. Yeah, I know the "best line in the league" stuff. But, honestly, were they after about 3/10? Sid plays with Neal. That's why he got 5 mil.

Lastly, I make a big push for Parise. And that's my first line. Parise, Sid, Neal. Add a little grit on D, kick back and watch the show.

NPV set our imaginary cap @ $68,000,000...but realistically the cap will probably be pretty close to it's current number of $64,400,000. Suddenly we're $4,000,000 OVER the cap.

I should add that there has been some speculation that the cap number (after the new CBA) could actually drop below where it's currently at...by as much as $1,000,000 to $2,000,000. That would not be good for us.

Sutter will not go for less than 6. But again, that defense is over-paid. Find a Hal Gill or someone of that nature. You need stay at home-defense. That is a big part in making the defense work for Bylsma's system. Plus if GMRS decides to fire Bylsma, a stay at home D still will work in that defense.

I still say Suter will sign somewhere for less than $6,000,000 if he gets good term. Detroit will probably get him for around $5.8M and 5-7 years.

we don't need to bring in a marquee defenseman. spending 5-6 mill on that type of player will be a waste of money. we need a #4 who is big, experienced and gnarly - not suter or webber.

unless you're trading malkin (which is insane), now isn't the time to make any significant investments in players. even if we ditch martin, we need to have that money available in a couple years when we need to re-up letang. the only signings should be old school shero moves: veterans on short term deals.
