Maybe because he sucks?

a) the "rankings" you see may look nothing like (and generally look nothing like) the rankings each team has individually...so throwing "this guy was 17th, but this guy was 10th and we could have traded down here if..." is all bologna unless you have some serious, serious sources with every team in the league.
b) It's pretty clear we don't have a Swedish or Finnish scout. Look at our draft record. You think we're so overly familiar with Teravainen or Forsberg there? This isn't a video game. No one goes around passing around a sheet that says: Forsberg: Acc. 83, Agi. 79, Spd. 85 ... Ovr. 81, Pot B+; Teravainen: Acc. 89....etc. You have an unexpected pick, way, way above your projected spot. If you're investing a major asset (major!) into something, you're sinking it in right off the hop. It's a sunken cost right off the podium. If you get a bunch of looks from your North American scouts that go, "well, we think..." "well, I saw him once at the WJCs..." "well, I've heard..." "He could be...uh..." you can't make that pick. Pouliot was attached to Joe Morrow's hip this year. We should know him like the back of our hand. Olli Maatta is Scott Harrington, we should know him like the back of our hand. Our scouting staff is neither imaginative nor particularly bright as far as I'm concerned...but let's be realistic here. You can't just start throwing these indictments around unless you have some knowledge of the big picture of how things work on the inside.
sure but when you have a whole TSN staff with different hockey resumes and X amount of total hockey knowledge years combined saying Forsberg is the number 3 overall talent in the draft, you have him at 8, you forward depth isnt as strong as it should be, and you draft a position that is your strength already....
its a bad pick.
Forsberg could be a bust, Pouliot could be the next S.Neidermayer. However it wasn't B.P.A. and I think at the time it was a bad pick.
Shero said it had nothing to do with Pouliot being there or not. Heck even the 6'3 russian for Geno to have a winger and neal to crosby would have been nice... ugh.. just dont know.
well at least the staal trade looks decent going forward.

Four months later, Nash still w/CBJ. The gift that keeps on hurting
