This guy isn't meant to play on the Third line of any team.

People just need to accept that Staal is gone. Yeah, the cap may go up to heights none of us even dreamed and might even go higher if the NHLPA has it's way. Yeah, the Pens wanna sign him and can pay him out the ass to do so, but what a lot of people seem to forget it that he has to WANT TO SIGN here.
Staal isn't a winger or a third line center. He's a Selke candidate, a PK Specialist, good faceoff man, great two way center who can also score 35 goals and is captain material that can easily be the face of a lot of Franchises. He might get the money here, but what he won't get here is everything else that he clearly can be. He would be completely and totally insane to sign here and frankly, i'm sick of not giving Sid the proper winger to accommodate him.

LGP: where somebody who hasn't come close to 30 goals since 2006 is now a 35 goal scorer

I have seen Malkin play wing many times when the big three are healthy. Why is that so unreasonable?
If you want to win another Cup, you need Jordan Staal or a Jordan Staal equivalent on your team. I would rather do what I can to keep a proven commodity than go out and find a replacement.

Would've gotten it if not for Mike Rupp's knee.

your post is fine, except for this. staal is an abomination on the power play - 2nd unit or otherwise.

Staal was fourth on the team in PP goals even with very little ice time on the first or second PP unit.

5 PP goals. the actual stat is much less impressive than the description of the stat.
as for ice time, he got more PP time per game (2 minutes) than any forward not on the top unit - about 30% more than the next 2nd unit guy. so the power play wasn't exactly foreign territory.
i think if neal went down, staal might be a decent option to fill the slot of "guy who just shoots". but he shouldn't be in any sort of play maker role.

Jordan Staal averaged 20:03 of ice time this year. That's pretty high for anyone. 6th overall in terms of the team.

JS: 30 million over 5 years?
RS: Crosby's going to be drooling into a sippy cup for at least 50 games a year, so we can get you that top line time.
JS: Cool! You want to get some brewskis?
RS: i got an 18 pack in the cooler...let's go to work.

Staal - Malkin - Neal - Big Line and tough to play against
Kunitz - Crosby - Dupius - Smaller/quicker line
I like that personally
Also give stall 1st pp time
Neal - Staal - Malkin front
Letang - Crosby
repalce staal with kunitz 45 seconds in.
