I have seen Malkin play wing many times when the big three are healthy. Why is that so unreasonable?

If you want to win another Cup, you need Jordan Staal or a Jordan Staal equivalent on your team. I would rather do what I can to keep a proven commodity than go out and find a replacement.

Again so you would hinder a guy who was playoff MVP at the center position to accommodate Jordan Staal? It makes zero sense. What Staal does is more easily replaceable than what Malkin does.

Before you even decide to trade a player you have to look at what you will be in need of when you lose him. Staal is one of the league best on the PK. He is to good to be a 3rd line center and even if Staal didn't get alot of goals he would still be one of the best 3rd liners. He also is a solid 2nd line powerplay guy.

And some of these trades i see for Staal all address offensive players in return. Didn't we lead the league in goals, we lose a great defenisve forward and get more offence back.

Any trade for Staal i want to address defence, defensive forwards or a defenisve defenceman and physical players in return. In 91 and 92 Patrick didn't go out and grab more socirng he got us defensive and physical players, we need that more than scorers.

Staal was fourth on the team in PP goals even with very little ice time on the first or second PP unit.

as for ice time, he got more PP time per game (2 minutes) than any forward not on the top unit - about 30% more than the next 2nd unit guy. so the power play wasn't exactly foreign territory.

i think if neal went down, staal might be a decent option to fill the slot of "guy who just shoots". but he shouldn't be in any sort of play maker role.

Good point, but when he was on the PP, he wasn't exactly surrounded with scoring wingers\defensemen. I think he did very well considering who he was playing with. I think that is part of the problem, he wants to play with the big kids.

Thats right. While Sid was out, he was the second line center most of they year, so he played second line minutes. He played less minutes than Sid and Geno in the playoffs, just like the rest of his career.

What if it's both?

Here's a trade to get's the kids goin...

St. Louis receives, (F) Jordan Staal, (F) Chris Kunitz, (D) Kris Letang, and a conditional pick in the 2014 NHL Draft (a 1st round pick if Staal doesn't resign in 2013, a 3rd round pick if he does).

Pittsburgh receives, (D) Alex Pietrangelo, RFA (F) T.J. Oshie, and (F) Patrik Berglund.

STL gets young cup experience and a real #2 center they can solidify their #2 line with behind Backes up front. Kunitz becomes added scoring grit for their 2nd/3rd line. Letang instantly becomes their best skater and puck mover from the back end.

PIT gets a larger physical d-man with tremendous upside at both ends (already better defensively than Letang), but also a guy who can man the point on the PP and actually fire the puck. Berglund is a downgrade from Staal, but a strong defensive forward with untapped skill...great for 3rd line C behind Malkin and Crosby. Oshie (who can play either wing) is to Sid what Neal is to Malkin, plus he has that coveted right handed shot for the PP.

Not to mention, after next season...with conservative estimates...

Staal ($5,500,000) + Kunitz ($3,725,000) + Letang ($3,500,000) = $12,725,000
Pietrangelo ($5,000,000) + Oshie ($3,500,000) + Berglund ($2,250,000) = $10,750,000

How are you down on Kunitz? I agree that he took some stupid penalties during the playoffs, but you could probably say the same thing for half the team during that series... Kunitz is comming off a CAREER year in both Points and Goals... He is also are only other legit top 6 winger besides Neal. So I ask again, what are you down on him for?
