I'm starting to wonder if Detroit could be interested in Paul Martin. Seems like they have some holes on defense that Suter alone won't be able to fill after moving Brad Stuart.

I don't disagree....with the lack of top end defense available in the UFA market especially. Whatever team misses out on Weber/Suter will have to go to the 2nd tier D men and there are not a lot available on the UFA market.

I don't think trading Martin is going to be as hard as many think on here...

There won't be a problem trading Martin at all, he is a top 4 defenseman in the NHL. Some people on HFBoards are only asking for a 2nd or 3rd round pick in return. Tomas Kaberle garnered a prospect, 1st, and conditional 2nd at the deadline. While he was set to be an UFA there is always a market for a top 4 PMD.

I'm sure Shero could smooth that over...If Martin has the opportunity to go to a team that wants him and he will be viewed as a top 3-4 d man, I'm sure he'd go...

If the GM tells you that he wants to trade you, the player will eventually sign off on a reasonable deal/destination.
We're not talking Mats Sundin here....

Having said that, we really have no idea if Shero is even interested in trading Martin.

It doesn't sound like the Islanders are interested in re-signing Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau. Sometimes, people look at guys like him and say, "He's only getting points because he's playing with John Tavares." While that may be true, it's always a gamble the next guy has the same chemistry with your star. Or that Parenteau will go somewhere else and get 67 points with a different star.

I wonder if he'd put up 67 alongside Sid or Geno for a decent price $$$

Someone like Minnesota or Florida will pay him megabucks though I feel

Asham is useful. he took a bad penalty in game 3, but he was just following the lead of the rest of the team. if he's going to get run out of town for that, then i call shenanigans.

I really don't understand the backlash from that hit. I can youtube countless times when after a very dangerous hit a player went crazy on the deliverer of the hit. Heck an easy one off the top of my head is Kasper after his hit on Lindros.

While cross checking the face is bad, I don't encourage it, I don't see what Asham did is anything more than trying to beat the **** out of the guy who took a very dangerous run at a teammate.

I'm inclined to agree with this, but the team lacks serious toughness. That being said, it's hard to have toughness when you're always out with an injury.

I can't say I'd be upset if he was back, or sad that he was gone.

our 4th line doesn't need continuity. he can be in and out of the lineup with injuries and it's no big deal - especially since he makes no money.

as for the speed, it's only an issue if you have adams out there with him. you can't have 2 snails on the ice at once, but 1 isn't an issue.

Well when he was out, who brought any kind of toughness to the ice last year on the lower lines? They need to fix that, because I can't even remember offhand who it was after Cooke became neutered.

If Tangradi gets a shot I wouldn't be that upset, but I doubt it will happen.

There are better options. I agree with penny's assessment. And malkamaniac is right, what good is your toughness if you can't dress for more than half the season?

I thought Jeffery would work out too. It's a shame what happened to his knee last year, and it's even more of a shame he wasn't given the opportunity to get back into shape and get games in.

I still feel that guys like Jay McClement or Jim Slater would work out much better. They won't score as much as Guastad, but not by much, and it's not like he's some dynamic offensive player anyway. Defensively they're just as good, if not better...and frankly either will be $2,000,000 or so cheaper against the cap.
