I guess GM Ray Shero is over the spring mess. Times will be a-changing.

EDIT - And the Pens just tweeted he's signed for 2 years.

He doesn't have a year remaining, though. He is a UFA.

Updated: signed to two year contract.

I like

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired goaltender Tomas Vokoun from the Washington Capitals in exchange for a 2012 seventh-round draft pick, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The Penguins then signed Vokoun to a two-year contract worth an average annual value of $2 million. Vokoun’s contract begins with the 2012-13 season and runs through the 2013-14 campaign.

:?

Now I'm confused whether I like this or not. $2m is a lot for a backup goaltender, especially for the situation that the Pens are in with the salary cap.

I'm guessing he was told he would compete with Fleury for playing time and if he is better, he would essentially be #1, including the playoffs.

MAF is now under pressure...I like it.
It he wants to stare off into space in the playoffs, he can do it from the bench.

They must have a good idea as to what the Cap will be. If they signed him for 2 million and it's going up to 70 million. Then ok.

In Shero I trust.... there that's out of the way...

$2m for a backup?? WTF?

Maybe the end game is to have Fleury more rested and have him play only 60 games while the backup plays 20+.

first off season move is a good one. Johnson was done and Fleury had to play way too much because of it. Now Vokoun can play some and keep Fleury fresh.

So assuming a full 82 game schedule next year (labor peace), how many starts does MAF get assuming no long term injuries to either guy? I say mid-fifties.

With Vokoun talent and paying him 2m per year....I think the split might be closer to 55/25
