$2m for a backup?? WTF?

Maybe the end game is to have Fleury more rested and have him play only 60 games while the backup plays 20+.

2m is worth every penny when your starting goaltender is a headcase choking dog in the playoffs.

Yeah the more I think about it the more I like it.... All around piece of mind.

- Fleury get's less starts (let's face it, he is not a GP machine).
- Pens get quality starts on Fleury's nights off.
- Vokoun will push Fleury to do better (ala competition).
- Hella nice insurance policy in the event of a hurt Flower.

$2 million for a guy that can play a very good amount of games, at a high level. $2 million isn't worth what it used to be. In fact, it's roughly worth what $1 million was in 2006. The Pens have skimped on backups since Fleury's been here, now we have - evidently - a security blanket. A guy we can confidently play 2 games out of 3, or 3 in a row if need be. When's the last time we really had that? So we spent an extra $750,000 or $1 million on arguably the league's best backup goalie...I'm not really that concerned...

you gotta put this in context, all the points Johnson didn't get us really hurt, we should have won the division if not the presidents trophy. We should of faced the caps or Florida in the first round instead of the Flyers.

Ok winning the division or presidents ins't all that important but placement in the first round helps.

And the same goalie just capped off his 3rd straight choking dog playoff appearance with an all time historically bad performance. Clearly RS knows that Fleury's career is coming to a close unless he turns things around this season and we need to have a plan in case he doesn't.

I know, $2 million in today's NHL is nothing. You can sign 35 $2 million dollar players if the cap goes up to 70 million......even on a 23 man roster your average salary is going to be 3 million. 2 million for Vokoun=bargain

Yup, it's entirely MAF's fault. Let's go that route.

Something tells me that Vokoun had already expressed his desire to play for Pens to McPhee for these two conference foes to make a trade.

Seems like McPhee was against the wall and figured he would at least get something for TV.

Take a look at Vokoun's playoff track record. I'm familiar with it because many Pens fans (undoubtedly the same as those praising this move) cited it as to why the Caps didn't get a steal with picking Vokoun up at $1.5M last year.

You would never pay that much for a backup if you were confident and satisfied in your #1 guy. Now, they REALLY have a lot of money tied up in their goaltender position.
