From what I hear, the new CBA will ban these long deals. I don't think we can expect Malkin to settle for the same cap hit. The way I see it, Sid took less in exchange for the longer term. That won't be an option for Malkin.

I'm guessing that Shero and Co brought up the pending Malking contract to Crosby prior to this agreement. Knowing what we know of Sid he offered to stay where he was $ wise so they didn't have to lose guys like malkin/letang, etc. I wouldn't think it matters to Sid if geno makes $9 per year on a shorter term after 2014.

While that may be the case, I'm 100% convinced that Crosby had neck issues and not Head issues. Once they "re-diagnosed" his injury, he was on the ice in no time.

That being said, the Pens are smart enough to understand the risk and you still sign this guy. His name alone will re-pay all the money if not most of it back in Jersey sales/merchandise.

It's the cap hit that matters here. The Pens have already made back the $104 million by getting Console, even if he were to retire and they still had to pay him the full contract the cap hit would disapear and the lower cap hit now means they can sign better players.

IF he gets hurt Pens put him on LTIR and get the cap space back or he retires (and they get the cap space back) and gets a front office job. I don't see much downside here.. but then again I don't write the checks while players sit on the LTIR like they did when they brought Kovalev in while still paying Sid/Geno to be on injury list.

i don't think there is much risk of future injuries and it hurting the Pens. If Crosby has major head injuries and can't play he will just retire and since his contract was signed before age 35 it won't count against the cap and the pens are off the hook to pay him. With any other type of injury the pens can just put him in LTIR and use some of his cap space for a replacement player.

About the only risk I see is if Sid is indeed injured and he decides to try an dick the pens over, which i don't see any indication of him wanting to do that.

For salary cap purposes, this is correct.

Worst case scenario would be several more years like this year where he's up in the air and we continue to hear the word "symptoms" all the time. If he does retire you're off the hook cap wise, but you figure that it could drag on for years before he retires. Plus it's still real money the Pens have to pay and despite recent success this org is not a bottomless cash pit like some other orgs.

Just to be clear though I actually am optimistic that Sid will be fine and I am quite happy with this news. Merely making some observations from a business perspective.
