Worst case scenario would be several more years like this year where he's up in the air and we continue to hear the word "symptoms" all the time. If he does retire you're off the hook cap wise, but you figure that it could drag on for years before he retires. Plus it's still real money the Pens have to pay and despite recent success this org is not a bottomless cash pit like some other orgs.
Just to be clear though I actually am optimistic that Sid will be fine and I am quite happy with this news. Merely making some observations from a business perspective.
Penguins may not have to pay in full. Pending knowledge of the insurance of the contract.

You have to wonder just how important winning that cup has been to keeping Sid in a Pens uniform for life.
Had we not won by now, you would have to wonder if he would have wanted to experiment with another team to see if he could win there. With one cup already in the books, I am sure he now believes that the Pens have what it takes, just have to find the right combo of guys again.
Food for thought.

I always tend to try and look at the larger issue, or a well rounded picture of things and yes the health issues do pop into my mind a bit.
But i do love it.

I"m not sure why the health issues are more of a concern with the contract than without.

A 12-year extension with no pay raise? This has to be the biggest "hometown discount" in major sports history!

u have to separate the actual money going into sids bank account, with what this means for the cap. the pens can afford to cut him a cheque right now for the entire contract amount and say p*** off. the cap hit is unreal, and like some have said, he isn't 35+. if he retires or can't play long term, the cap hit is zero. stop pretending this money is yours and u have just mortgaged your life away. great hockey deal and it can't even be argued.

Curious to see how this floats next year with 71. Will he take the carbon copy deal like last time? I gamble to say... yes (assuming the new CBA allows such deals).
Yeah, I'm sure he's inconsolable.

Sorry.. I guess I have to be more clear in my posts. I was clearly being humorous on Gino crying.

Hopefully he is openly cursing Parise and Suter on Sunday afternoon for their deals with the Pens...

Thank you Sid. You've restored a little bit of my faith in professional sports and players loyalties to certain cities and ownership groups. It's a great day for hockey in Pittsburgh!

Yep.

I just spent the past 5 minutes trying to figure out why Eric Fehr would be upset with sid's contract... then realized you wrote Donald.

I'm delighted that Sid didn't a higher cap hit than what he has. It's still ridiculous that we commend athletes for ONLY accepting 9 million dollars a year and not waiting for something higher.

That is what true Captains do. They make sure the team can benefit overall. Great deal GMRS and Sid.
Oh by the way, with that deal my friend orders the apparel for the Penguins. He just texted me and asked "It is spelled P-A-R-I-S-E right? Number 9?"

This sure leaves the money open to go get Parise. I sure hope they repay Sid for this generosity by getting Parise on Sunday. Even if Parise costs 7 or 8 mil when you consider Sid is giving probably a 3 to 4 mil per year discount to the Pens Parise will only be costing 3 to 5 Mil... Just my way of rationalizing it
