In this case, perhaps the Pens were TOO pumped up at the beginning of the game (I noticed it, at least). You grip the stick a little tighter, you try to force things. It looks like they aren't motivated to some (because of the poor play), but the same can happen if they're over-energized. Perhaps the emotion was at a 10, when (for most players), it needed to be around a 7 or an 8.
Just because they play poorly doesn't mean they aren't motivated. Perhaps, it is the opposite, and the players need to be able to find their "zone". A coach cannot help them do this. It is up to the player to know what their optimal arousal level is and how to get back to it if they become "too focused".
