There seems to be some really conflicting opinions on whether Boychuk is soff or gritty.

Anyone remember more players we got off the waiver wire, the 2 best ones i can remember is Robert Lang (what a nice stint he had with us) and Craig Adams.

I think I can lend a hand to the whole soff, grit controversy. Boychuk plays with a chip on his shoulder, and <shudders> swagger. He can be pushed around, but he doesn't play a perimeter game. He gets himself involved, but is not an impact guy from a physical standpoint.

Johnny the Bomb has this to say about Boychuk:

Because the WBS Penguins played Charlotte in the playoffs two years ago, I’ve seen Zach Boychuk, who was claimed on waivers by the Penguins today, quite a few times. I always liked him. I’ve read scouting reports online that have called him highly skilled, but that’s not the impression I got. I thought his skating was really good and he had just enough grit to stick his nose into high-traffic situations, and that’s what made him successful. I thought his skill level might be high-end AHL but not high-end NHL, if you know what I mean.

Boychuk can think, though. His hockey IQ is very high. Kennedy has about the same level of hockey sense as a house plant.

What? His most productive AHL season is 65 points in 60 games. Tangradi's 31 in 37. He was drafted 14th overall. He's faster. He's more skilled. He's had good showings in the NHL, Tangradi hasn't.

Cost nothing. Like it alot.

Kip Miller seemed to do OK with Jagr if I recall :)

With no depth at forward in the organization, let's pretend we didn't trade our 1st rounder away in 2009 and had drafted Boychuk. Let's also pretend we had him playing very well in WBS for 3 seasons after juniors. We would all be clamoring for him to have had a shot on our top line by now if we had drafted him in the first round.

Zach Boychuk: I found out I got picked up on Twitter. I didn't know what team. I had to wait until #Pens GM Ray Shero called me

More Boychuk: Ray (Shero) said he likes what I bring to the team, speed, shot and I have to play my game

Pittsburgh Penguins ‏@penguins
More Boychuk: I stayed at Sutter's house in Carolina. He has an extra room for me (here) so I'll stay with him for a while

Pittsburgh Penguins ‏@penguins
More Boychuk: It's exciting to come to a team with a lot of superstars. Hopefully I can bring something good to the team

Pittsburgh Penguins ‏@penguins
More Boychuk: I want to be a full-time NHL player. I think I have the skills to do that. Pittsburgh giving opportunity. I hope to take adv

Bylsma said today he's playing with Malkin and Neal. Jeffrey was on Sid's wing due to Kunitz being sick. Rest Kunitz until he's 100%, nothing can have a chance to linger.

If Boychuk can be Kennedy for less than Kennedy's price, then I'm cool with this.

I thought Jeffrey played pretty good last night. Am I wrong? If he played well, looks like he gets rewarded by being replaced by an unknown waiver pickup? It might work out, but seems confusing to me. I guess the plan is to keep throwing people on Geno's line till someone sticks. If this doesn't work out, who's next?

No, not top-6. Where did you get this idea?

Organizational depth at forward is a good thing.

"Boychuk will see his first action in a Penguins uniform Saturday afternoon against the New Jersey Devils. And he’s been penciled in alongside the superstar duo of Evgeni Malkin and James Neal. But no matter where he’s expected to play, Boychuk is just happy to get in the lineup."

Could not agree more. This is the stuff that irritates me about HCDB. Jeffrey played well and his reward is off the 2nd line for a guy who has not proved anything. Does any other team jerk their players around like this? Or is this normal?
