Do the PITTSBURGH PENGUINS have a goaltending controversey?

Postby DocEmrick on Thu Jan 31, 2013 10:34 pm

To be honest, it seems like there is a controversy regarding the number one goaltending spot.

On one hand you have Flurry, who did win a cup in 09, but just hasn't performed consistently since, lest we forget last year's playoffs against the Phlyers.

On the other hand, you have a former number one, who kept some pretty horrible teams (defensively), Flordia, and the Capitals, in some pretty close races by making up where the defense lacked.

It seems like the Pens are almost in a similar position; a lacking defense, and for that, you have to go with Vokoun. He has been an absolute beast this year whereas Fleury has shown some signs of weariness, and perhaps that fact that he's French, he might be feigning for the shores of Le Blanc le 'Fleur early here, so I'd say for the next couple of games, give Vokoun the nod and reward him for his solid play in backstopping the team.

I don't know guys what do you think?

I think there's a bigger controversy over whether your (possible) daughter should play softball or hockey.

What's the controversy? Having two good players at one position?

The goaltending position has been the least of our worries this year so far. The biggest controversy is "what team shows up next game?"

After this guy spelled it "Flurry" I stopped reading and stopped taking him seriously. Did he make any valid points?

THERE IS NO CONTROVERSY!! NEXT!

So you'd start him Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday?
The nature of the condensed schedule means each goalie will be getting regular, frequent starts. No controversy, it's a fantastic situation to have.

Have people already forgotten Fleury's game against Ottawa?

No controversy. Fleury is and will continue to be the #1 guy, and Vokoun will continue to play well in a back up role.

How much controversy do Pens fans need?

Fleury and Vokoun will probably see a 60/40 split this year, as long as Vokoun plays well when he does play.

By all means, if the guy keeps playing great maybe that inches closer to 50/50. If it keeps the pressure on Fleury to play well, then it's having the intended effect.

Actually Vokoun should start Saturday for a few reasons. I think a goalie always deserves the next start after a shutout, pens have back to back day games and the 2nd is against a team that practiced vs Vokoun (when healthy) last year, and I think Vokoun should get a home start.

Perfect storm for him to get a 2nd straight start, and then Flower vs Caps on Sunday.

Vokoun just posted a shutout. He should get the next start and play as long as he's hot.
