Looks like we could have a boat load of dmen for under 10 mill. Alot of money to spend on forwards.

I would be shocked to see Orpik back when his contract is up at his age unless he is going to take a pay cut.

I expect him to take a paycut and finish his career as a Penguin.

It will be interesting, as Niskanen will need a new deal at the same time and Martin will have another year left.
Scratch that, Martin will be bought out, so no worries there. :slug:

Ideally the gap between Martin and Nisky narrows and Despres continues to get better. It would make buying Martin out the easy call.

In a perfect world, Letang, Despres, Nisky and Orpik are a good top 4 by end of year, Bortuzzo plays well enough to earn a #6 spot and you bring a vet like Eaton in at #5 and start working Dumoulin, Morrow, Samuelsson and Harrington in. Then there's still Maata and Pouliot.

If Paul Martin keeps playing as well as he has been this year, I don't want him bought out.

It all depends if Orpik and Letang sign extension Before the buyout period ends and how well Despres, Niskanen and Bortuzzo develop.

If we can get Letang and Orpik locked in long term at not too much more per season along with Nisky and Despres in the top 4 improving then moving Martin will be a cap necessity but the team should be better for it.

Good thing is their extensions won't kick in until the final year of Martin's deal so we can still trade him if there's any takers.

Lots of options now. I'm just happy he's playing well for the moment.

If I am worried about drop off in play it is coming from Orpik. When you bang bodies like he does yu just never know when the cliff is coming. There are 6 d-men currently signed thru next year on the roster. Love joy is UFA... See ya. Bortuzzo is RFA so he will likely be retained. Engelland will hopefully, finally be forced out of the top 6 by one of the younger guys. The log jam on D finally should start to show up next year. Maybe the one scenario we haven't thought of yet is the one that happens (trade Letang). It will be interesting to see the defense shake itself out in the next 2-3 years.

Well, I think Shero will deal at least one our more ready D prospects this season. If Letang prices himself off the team it wouldn't shock me to see him dealt for a big return at some point. I've seen $5 million thrown around but I have no doubt he could get closer to $7, but with the cap decrease I'm not quite sure how that number will shake out.

Also, the talk of Martin being bought out is a little puzzling. Couldn't we shop him around if he keeps up his stellar play this season? Seems like a mismanagement of assets just to throw the money away.

Only if Martin has a season like last year and we have the chance to resign a guy who was just a rental but ends up fitting in and is a better option for $5 million.

Make me a third. Too many people don't understand/think buyouts cost real money and the Pens are not a 'rich' team.
