What's up with Malkin's ice time?

Postby gregor on Sun Feb 03, 2013 9:56 am

Seems like it's been under 20 min. The last few games.

More penalty kills, less PP's?

HCDB may be managing the ice time due to the back to back nature of games this season?

Yep, that was my thought. Let's not forget that he's already played half a season.

Can't get any ice time when you are in the penalty box

Through 8 games, Malkin is averaging 19:19 and Crosby 21:20, which is a difference of 3 shifts per game. 1 shift from PK duty and 2 shifts from ES

PK TOI
Crosby :40
Malkin :01

PP TOI
Crosby 5:15
Malkin 5:18

ES TOI
Crosby 15:23
Malkin 13:59

Based on Malkin's performance in a few games, this is about right. I think everyone knows I want to see more PK time for him.

I don't know why they keep him away from the penalty kill. Dude has always been very good at it for Russia.

They've only had 1 game decided by 1 goal (not really a goal, a shootout) and 2 games decided by 2. When you are up big or down big, you don't double shift or skip line changes as much. The last 2 games in particular, the Pens have been way ahead, so there's no reason to keep throwing Malkin out there. In those situations you will typically roll 4 lines and keep everyone fresh.

I think the ES time difference between Sid and Malkin is mostly accounted for by face offs. During the important face offs, DB is either putting Sid out there with Malkin or putting Sid out there on another line.
