Ryan O'Reilly

Postby crush_lives_723 on Tue Feb 12, 2013 9:30 am

I say trade for his rights, or send an offer sheet. He would fit nicely as a center between Malkin and Neal. Thats right I said it, Malkin shouldn't be in the middle. The guy can't take face-offs. If the price is right I feel that this would solve many problems. Thoughts?

The price wouldn't be as right as you think. COL would match anything we offer, and then a trade would require some significant assets.

Not to mention he's asking for upwards of $4-million per year. There's a reason he hasn't come to terms with Colorado...

Besides those points, there's also no room for R2O after we add Iggy, Kulmenin and Katy, err, Corey Perry.

Put it this way. The inevitable deal that would get us O'Reilly would start with Brandon Sutter going the other way.

Doesn't make sense and you do realize that centers don't have to take faceoffs, right?

I'd guess having Neal on his side and wanting to win it cleanly back to him for a goal off the faceoff makes Malkin lose a few faceoffs too (since the other guy will be aware that he's gonna try it).

Probably same goes for the whole team. They want to do their set plays on faceoffs, and that might cost them a few wins and reduce their stats a little bit

Sure. Any time you know what the other guy is going to do in the dot, you can prepare for it. That faceoff play is a different wrinkle to something Malkin used to sometimes try by going after someone with a very wide-stance...he'd go forward between the opponent's legs and the winger on the right side (this play, as I recall, was only done on the left side of the ice) would beat his check to the net and score on Malkin pass across. Now they have this set up to Neal.

Faceoff plays are an underrated part of the game. I've only dabbled in them myself...they assert domination on under-prepared teams though. That really takes a hit to the opponent's confidence when you do that...

They're [faceoff plays] pretty much useless in the playoffs though. Teams can prepare for all your tricks and doodles.

That's why you have a few different options available. Hone them during the regular season and then you'll have choices during the playoffs. Let them prepare for one of them, and then hit them with something different, adjust to adjustments.

This, get a true top 6 winger for Sid and put Kunitz back on Malkins line.

Darren Dreger is reporting that the asking price for O'Reilly is a roster player and a top prospect.

At least if you sign Katy Perry you can count on a pair every night.

I don't have "Insider" access, and don't care to, but this link says O'Reilly is pretty much useless to the Pens:
http://insidepittsburghsports.com/story ... ing/55337/

They need wingers, not centers.
