Bennett will be given every chance to succeed. Its great to see that Pens are not clueless to development when it comes to players that are actually in their plans. Starting him off on the 3rd line while occasionally bumping him up is the smart thing to do with a young guy whose confidence in the NHL is very much a work in progress.

That's a hell of an assessment after only 2 games. One was ok and today he was no hands duper. I'm gonna need a few weeks to nail down the type of player he is

How do you expect a kid to play after watching his coach have a siezure?

He hasn't adjusted to the speed if the NHL game yet. He doesn't appear to have elite skating speed or change of direction, so it will be important to see how he fares in the next few games. His hands aren't there either. Maybe nerves.

I agree with this. He needs to find another half step this off-season so that he can really leverage his hands. Watching today, it was obvious that against a speedier team he works hard to stay in the play. He's not way out of it like Tangradi was, but he isn't pressing it either.

It is conceivable though that he looks a step slower because he is thinking first before jumping. Sometimes hard to tell.

I disputed a sizable salary raise for Dupuis with Shmenguin, but he has continued his production from last season. I also suggested he would be better suited to the third line... Duper is so valuable to this team (PK, chemistry with Sid, ES goal contribution, etc) and is making me eat my words, hope he really loves PGH and works out a deal with Shero.

Bennett would be more effective shifted with Sid IMO, Geno is stinking it up ES has lost faith in his LW merry go round and probably won't be the easiest guy to learn the ropes with.

I figure they've got to decide what they want to do with the wing position pretty soon. Malkin is still pacing points based purely off of the powerplay. He needs to be all world and not just a Specialist.

The biggest question with Bennett in my opinion is whether or not he'll be able to stay healthy. He'll need to fill out a bit if he's going to become a consistent NHL goal scorer. Without question, they will upgrade at the wing position at the deadline, but until then, Bennett and Cooke will both spend time there.

The whiff on the open shot from the faceoff circle had me chuckling. Its almost like the puck came to him, he realized he had time and just paniced. He'll get better the more he plays. This game Wednesday against Philly might be an eye opener for him physicality wise. He just needs to get his feet underneath him. Patience.

I'm just referring to the duper of.the past. I've always been a super duper supporter. The only players I haven't liked on the team the past few years was Mike Comrie and BIG DAWGOGG. Bums

Do you know what a joke is? I was comparing him to the legend of no hands duper, which obviously is just mythical creature at this point.

Yeah.

Don't forget it took him about 7-10 games in the AHL to get acclimated, so I'd expect around a similar number in the NHL, at least.

I don't get the constant whining about Bennett not immediately being placed on a scoring line. It's always been a silly demand that every forward prospect with any offensive talent must be playing on one of the top lines or they're misusing him. The standard should always be that these guys need to play the system properly and bring it at both ends of the ice. If they do what they're supposed to do they'll be rewarded for it. From what I've seen of Bennett, they can keep playing him as a third liner because he's doing things away from the puck that is helping them. Hopefully he chips in a little offense as well. Maybe he even eventually makes his way up to the second line and clicks there.

The attitude that Bylsma doesn't know how to develop young players is garbage. He deserves plenty of criticism for other things, but that's not one of them. A guy like Tangradi failed because he's a terrible hockey player that eventually will stop getting chances soley because he's got some size. It wasn't because Bylsma didn't give him 15 game auditions to do something playing with some of the best players in hockey or because he had the audacity to play him on a lower line and ask him to be able to do the small things to help his team even if he isn't scoring. It's because he just isn't any good.

Bennett is a different case than Tangradi and Boychuk. He's very young still and I think it'll be enough for him to stick if he's just playing the system effectively even if he's not putting up a ton of points. They will be more patient with him as far as that goes than they will guys who are a few years older and have a bunch of NHL failures already on their resumes.

Welcome back, HH.

The biggest difference to me is that the Pens obviously care about Bennett. They've got a plan for him and they're taking his development slowly. I'm happy with their decisions with him. What I don't like is that Tangradi, Jeffrey, and Boychuk have been given the scraps and discarded, because they're not in the Pens plans in any significant way.

You could say this is because that's all that they deserve, but I'd argue that developing role players should be taken pretty darn seriously as well. The Pens would be much better off next season giving those 3 (who are still young as far role players go) ice time to gain some confidence and mature, so that they could potentially replace the current supporting cast who will all be up for new contracts. Without really knowing whether Jeffrey or Boychuk can handle 3rd line duties, can the Pens afford to not re-sign Cooke / Dupuis / Adams?

What if they had signed Parise? What if they want to add a top-6 forward on contract through next season? Having cheaper alternatives ready for the supporting cast is essential... But these guys are getting discarded. It's not big potatoes, for sure; but as a manager, even the smallest of assets deserves proper care.

Bennett played less than 9 minutes yesterday. IMO, its very dumb to call him up and have him watch 50 minutes a night.
