Cooke got a game misconduct...

Postby Big Easy Pens Fan on Fri Feb 15, 2013 6:44 pm

...near the end of the game the other night. Why? He did nothing during that confrontation with Neil except back off. No punches thrown, no shoving, or anything. Would they just give him the misconduct to protect him from further attacks?

He got a 10 minute misconduct, not a game misconduct. But yeah, the refs likely just wanted to get both players off the ice

Either for protection or because he tried to toss Neil's stick over the glass.

Why not just invent a "Roughing" call on Cooke there, to get him off the ice til the end of the game?

Misconducts aggregate, so later this year he could face a suspension for getting 3 misconducts (if he nabs more misconducts, which he is always 90% to a misconduct call simply for putting on a jersey with "Cooke" on the back of it).

It's BS. He did nothing wrong and if the other team can't control themselves at the end of a game, the league has the power to lay the hammer down on them for it. But instead, they drop it on Cooke's head because they can and nobody will complain about it except Penguin fans.

Yes. At the time, IIRC there was 2:06 left in the game, so a regular minor wouldn't have sent him to the locker room for the rest of the game.

Oh, I thought that was his own stick. But being that it was Neal's, it was probably a good idea.

If they had given him one regular minor (but for what?) plus the misconduct, then the Sens would still have had the opportunity to pull their goalie since it would have been a 4-on-4. With the misconduct with no minor attached, that option for the Sens was pretty much out the window.

The stick over the glass attempt is probably what gave him the misconduct.

He attempted to throw Neil's stick over the boards. Auto misconduct.

There was an article on THN that Kerry Fraser was talking about that from a fans question. He said it would have been a 10 minute misconduct just to get him off the ice to prevent further retaliation to him. He also said it's a good thing that the stick didnt go over the glass or that would have given him a game misconduct as well for throwing stuff over the boards.

Cooke was getting attacked by Neil, and he still had the presence of mind to want to offer a souvenir to a lucky fan in the stands. What a guy.

Im pretty sure that only applies for game misconducts. Ten minute misconducts are the NHLs version of putting a child in timeout.

and this is true at any level of hockey. I played a beer league game in which an opposing player's stick broke. he was so upset (it was an older stick that you can't get anymore) that he tossed it over the glass. even though there was no one anywhere near where he tossed it he still got a misconduct for it.
