Be the GM - What do you add/subtract ?

Postby Brugrabud on Thu Feb 21, 2013 11:39 am

I agree with most assessments that this team lacks leadership in the form of a Gary Roberts or Billy Guerin.

I don't see Crosby/Malkin having the same effect even though they are captains on the team. I do see Orpik filling that role, but not sure if it really is the same.

For example take a look at the clip below: (About 6:28)

After the Flyers game (pick one from the playoffs or last night) this is where I just don't see Crosby having this influence. Granted you aren't going to find many Messier's out there available but we do have the young assets if indeed it leads to a cup this year which is the ultimate goal in the end.

That said who out there fits that mold on a team that isn't playoff bound?

1. Iginla
2. Jovanovski
3. Morrow
4. Getzlaf
5. Souray

Available Assets
Engelland (if we need an enforcer, just call up Mac to play those games)
Kennedy
(Pick a D Prospect)
Jeffrey

Subtract: Bylsma and the entire coaching staff
Add: Lindy Ruff and all new staff.

It worked in 2009. It can work again.

regarding personnel moves, it's all very simple. an expensive player cannot come to this team. we don't have the money come july 1, and we don't have anyone to ditch to free up cap space. additionally, we don't have the right assets to trade for a rental. expect transactions that exclusively range from "nothing" to "small".

Or, instead of firing the staff right now (and if Ruff is cool with it), hire Ruff as an "assistant coach" on the bench, and bump Reirdon or Granato up to a press box/assistant coach role. You have secured your "head coach in waiting".

Best case scenario, Ruff adds the wisdom years of experience brings, and makes DB a better head coach by sharing it. Worst case (or not... ) Disco gets the axe and in steps Ruff.

Morrow is the only available option out there, as Iginla is still a hypothetical. Jovo? For grizzled leadership and toughness? Guy's as placid as a bathtub.

I definitely think this team could use a veteran presence like a Guerin or Roberts. Especially one who is a bit physical. Also, would like a veteran, physical, DEFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN, in the style of Hal Gill.

I don't think they need to make a big splash.

Firing Bylsma after 1 loss where the team came back from a deficit (yes, I know they gave up a lead, not the point), only to be killed by a really bad goal is the utter definition of a knee-jerk reaction.

Would that mean the team defense getting exponentially worse over the next 3 years again? Thats scary.

... I don't even know what to say to this. This is just terrible.

The team is tied for 1st in the division and 2nd in the conference.

Just... :face:

Looks like we have to wait for the trade deadline for changes. This team needs alot of help but i think a crease clearing dman and some leadership is needed most. Orpik and Vokuon were like statues last night.

There are a few things just "off" on this team and most require managing current personnel a little differently.

Neal is the problem on Malkins line with not having a good fit on LW. Malkin can play with anyone but Neal can't. He only clicked at even strength with Kunitz on the other side. Get Kunitz back to Malkin's wing.

Dupuis is fine with Sid, but they need a better LW, or RW if Dupuis moves to the left. Bennett can be that player. Outside the organization so can Boyes, Cullen and Prospal.

Sutter needs his shooter on the LW, Boychuk actually looked really good there. Move Cooke to the RW and trade Kennedy or play him over Adams some nights on the 4th line?

4th line is fine.

Despres needs to play more, so does Bortuzzo.

Letang-Despres
Martin-Orpik
Bortuzzo-Niskanen

Gives us the best combinations to succeed and cover for any rookie mistakes now so in April they won't make those mistakes.

Shero knows what the team needs and he will get something done. Since we're first in the division (wait, what?), there is no need for panic, desperation, or knee-jerking.

Prospal has hands, but his defensive play is atrocious. Not what this team needs.

I liken last night's version of Vokoun more to a sloth than a statue. He moved, but very slowly...

I never seen anything like that scirmish in front of the net and Vokoun just stood there and watched. Orpik, i actually thought he was hurt. Then Letang's refusal to shoot on the powerplay...No backchecking at times. Why can't Shero just start tweeking this team now with trades, cause I'm pretty sure you can find a crease clearing dman now. Oilers got Fristic for a third.

Who are these crease clearing defensemen that people are looking for? I want names and explanations of how they are going to be acquired.

This is pure speculation on my part, but do you think it is possible that Despres has been sitting because Shero is trying to come to an agreement with a GM(s) and they don't want to risk their piece of the trade being injured before the trigger is pulled?
