Considering Crosby has avgeraged 1.41 points per game (4th All-Time) in his career to Malkin's 1.23 along with Crosby's superior faceoff abilities, do you think Malkin's cap hit should equal Crosby's?

This isn't quite an apt comparison. IMO, Jagr was head and shoulders above Selanne throughout the 1990's. Yes, Selanne produced points when he was healthy, but I don't think he was ever a real threat to take the scoring title from Jagr. Whereas, in any given season, Crosby and Malkin can be battling for that title.

Genos deal can only be 8 years long and you won't have to worry about the varience since Geno will be in his prime all through the deal so as you can imagine his cap hit will be higher than Sids. I am sure Sid doesn't care.

This is a valid point except most teams key on Crosby and Malkin only has to go up against second pairings. Also, you could argue Malkin has had better linemates (Malone, Sykora, Neal) vs (Armstrong, Recchi, Dupuis).

Yup, especially with the cap going back down to $64.3M next season and possibly staying there for a few years until league revenues get back up to speed. Even an $8.7M cap hit is going to create problems with Sutter, Orpik, Letang, Niskanen, Despres, and Engelland all hitting free agency at the same time.

Sid took 8.7 because it was a circumvention deal. He made out well in that regard. They can't offer Geno the same term or upfront money so he may be insistent on a higher cap hit.
