Game 23 vs. Tampa - Thoughts from the Morning After

Postby Penspal on Tue Mar 05, 2013 8:44 am

Pens win 4 - 3

- Geno was back and looking great. His foot speed was very noticeable all night. Could rest actually help a hockey player?
- Pee-air pointed out countless times that Eaton & Nisky played well together, he was right. BUT, this is TBay, not Boston, Philly or any team with size
- Orpik was BRUTAL last night. Its not the pairing, its his decision making, rest him (especially after he got rocked in the third)
- MAF stood tall when he had to. No chance on either Stamkos goal
- A comeback win after 2 periods was much needed for this team. Inspires confidence especially when it was the Malkin- Crosby goal combo
- Cooke was joking with Malkin about why he didn't get that empty net pass..... Turns out Geno was correct in giving it to Neal
- Glass had some HARD hits in the third, maybe he heard about our discussion on hitting? :fist:
- Another goalie injury in the East. Every one of these potentially makes things easier for the Pens
- Letang is getting heat from LGP'ers for his questionable defence, but his offensive game is at an all time high. Letang is leading the league in pts for dman
- Pens Powerplay is unorthodox and tough to stop.
- For the last few years, I used to believe the Pens could get a shorty almost every game. This year, add Sid and ....... well, not so much. Staal factor?
- T-minus X days until the trade deadline. If GMRS can keep cap space free, I see some players who are playing like they WANT to be upgraded.

This is not the Washington Capitals at all though. President's Trophy and then bust!

I cant remember exactly when it happened, but Geno deked like 2-3 players at the blue line then turned in to take a shot that got blocked, who was skating along right next to him calling for a pass, Kris Letang. Since Geno's shot got blocked it was now a 3v1 the other way and should have been a goal except Tampa sucked. His offensive game is great, but it is coming at a cost of his defense. I think he needs to better pick the times he "jumps" into the play.

There is some talk of Columbus and the Pens making a trade as there were gm's and assitants at the game. Despres and Jack Johnson's names were mentioned. Not sure if I like a even up trade, I think we could more from the Blue Jackets.

I was only able to see the third period, and it sounds like I didn't miss much.

The Malkin goal was one of those special plays.

Crosby with another multi point game. 34 in 22... Nuts. On pace for 127 in a full season.

Its worth paying for 2 superstars when they both play like superstars.

You can afford to have one Letang on your team. Many teams accept the defensive shortcomings of one of their defensemen just to get some offense going. Winger needs to see that Letang is moving up and fill in for him, Letang needs to see when there is no one that can cover for him and reconsider

Isn't Sid and Jack Johnson good friends? If there is any way to add a RJ Umbringer to the deal i would like that. WHat assets do the Pens have to throw their way, Niskenin, Kennedy, Cooke, Despres... and a few other prospects. Its always fun to look at this stuff.

Welcome home Gene! He did excellent on his face offs too. An action that require brains skills of a non-concussed person. 8-)
Scoring goals is the DNA of the penguins. Sometimes I think we’re trying to fit square pegs, round holes. Embrace the run and gun.
I cheered loudly and enjoyed the entire game. Student rushers help the atmosphere.
Brooks ; playing against stamkos; trying to put hands on butter. He played better; took a vicious hit from lecavalier. Thankfully, able to finish the game.
Flower had a great save in the 3rd, all leg reflex on vinny or somebody, around the net.
Shame on me; GMRS would not toss somebody on the ice that couldn’t help; Mark Eaton can play.
Come back win in the 3rd; they can do it!
Daypray playing and learning and getting the job done.
Kristopher Letang; keep shooting the puck. Can’t give up on him.
Steve Stamkos, I can’t think of a player I have seen since watching hockey, that played his style. Effortless shot. M Garon playing a good game until he left.
thanks for the fleece blanket, love it!

I don't think there's any danger of us getting the President's Trophy but, I get your point.

I swear that Sid planted a rubber magnet in his stick blade. It just blows my mind how he controls the puck at all times.
Eaton is a very calming presence on the back end.
Letang had a good game. He hit the pipe twice and was good on the PP. He did have a couple WTF moments.
Letang Orpik make a bad pairing. Orpik looks old and worn down. Letang makes questionable decisions at times. I almost feel that Orpik is our weakest link on the defense.
Malkin goal was sweet.

I was thinking about that CBJ thing last night.

Umberger for the second line. Cooke goes back down to the third. TK is moved for whatever.

Kunitz - Crosby - Dupuis
Neal - Malkin - Umberger
Jeffrey/Cooke - Sutter - Bennett/Cooke/Jeffrey
Glass - Adams/Vitale - Trade for a grittier guy

Can someone please sell the idea of Tyler Kennedy's trade value to me? You must consider his current form, past form, current salary, current contract term, versatility,...etc.

I think Jeffery or Kennedy for one of their Dmen. But having all their top people in for the game, it's something bigger.
