Unfortunately I don't see much there except maybe Tom Pyatt who I think is a good 4th line option, but he is not a large human.

My question is what kind of production can we ecpect out of Iginla (if we get him) now at this point of his career? He has had good seasons latter in his career but he is slowed down a bit this season. How does he fit in our line up? We wouldn't even use him on the top power play unit. We could even use him on our 3rd line with Sutter, but would he (or can he) play a shut down roll on the 3rd line?

I guess you really got to look at how much and you are going to pay for Iginla, then compare it to how much you got to pay for Clowe ,MacAuthur Morrow or Roy.

You don't pay the kind of price you pay for Iginla - as has been said one hundred times in the thread - to put him on the third line. You don't acquire a HHOF player like this to stuff him on the third line and not give him PP time. That's silly. If you need a third liner, you take a 2nd or a 3rd and you get a third liner...

I'd prefer that we set our sights on the 3rd and 4th line. If we can get someone that could potentially chip in some offense like Clowe for the 3rd and then a true "energy" guy for the 4th.

At this point that is still a lot to ask with so many teams in the running. Hockey trades are going to be tough as a way to fill out three spots if we are also looking for a veteran D for depth. I just don't see the need for Iginla either, but boy I would hate to see Boston get him.

Well, he scored 32 goals last season, playing with worse players than Sid or Geno so he will probably do just fine. Iginla is never going to play on the third line, it won't happen in a million years. He is going to play with Sid or Geno if we get him. I would prefer to see him play with Sid because I feel like Malkin has enough firepower as it is at his disposal.

Clowe's best days are behind him, and if the Pens are going to try and upgrade their third or fourth lines, they need do to so by adding someone with speed. If you look at those lines right now, the only guy with legit speed is Vitale, and maybe Kennedy. Adams, Cooke and Glass are all slow, and perhaps that's a big reason why their PK has struggled this year.

Try and re-sign Ladislav Smid if his agent will do a deal for less than $3.8M per season. Target is $3.3M to $3.5M. If Smid wants $4M or higher, then the game changes. If he wants $4M without any movement restrictions, then I think I would re-sign him anyway. But, I would do so knowing that at some point in the coming 18 months, you are going to have to trade that contract. And if Zbynek Michalek can be traded, I think a $4M Smid could be traded as well. That buys you time to find a replacement. If he wants $4M or higher and a NTC, then I think you trade Smid at the deadline. Ideally, you would approach someone like the Pens looking for Joe Morrow or Simon Despres, offering a tough veteran for a less proven commodity. It would hurt to trade Smid, but the team needs to manage its cap situation and paying Smid more than $3.8 makes no sense longer term.
