What about trading Paul Martin in the off season so you can use that 5 million to keep Malkin and Letang? The Pens have young defensemen ready to take over, and Martin's salary will help with Letang and Malkin.
Highly doubt this would happen for a few reasons but at first blush, it isn't so bad.
1. The Pens are actively still looking for a top 4 guy to play with Letang. That means big money spent on the blueline from an outside source and that the Pens ARE GOING TO SIGN LETANG.
2. Martin is obviously your best defenseman outside of Letang and if he isn't the partner for Letang then that obviously means he will be in another pairing to help anchor the blueline.
This makes Orpik the guy i would most suspect to be traded. He's older. Paid 3.75 million per season and isn't the partner for Letang. This is the only guy i could see them moving at the blueline in order to make room from a fiscal standpoint because all the rest either make too little or are too valuable to move.
