Game 25 vs. Leafs - Thoughts from the Morning After

Postby Penspal on Sun Mar 10, 2013 9:54 am

Pens win 5-4 shoot-out

- Win, but lose if Malkin is hurt badly
- Sid was amazing... every game now he's playing out of his mind
- PK was poor, clear clearing dman anyone?
- Kunitz didn't score, but looks so confident in everything he does
- Bennett carries himself very well, even in HNIC interviews
- For most of the game, Pens D played the way it needed to, mimizing Leaf chances
- short form today, on the road, looking forward to tonight!!!!

- After that game, I am firmly convinced that Sidney Crosby is not from Earth ... he's just visiting
- Beau Bennett is the future
- If only Fleury just had to do shootouts ... he looks unstoppable in shootouts

-Get Murray and Clowe from San Jose.......crease clearing defensman and gritty two way forward. Both could be had w/out giving up the farm.
-Take the regular season victories obviously but this team needs to D up when necessary. You can't keep blowing 2 goal leads and expect to win in the playoffs.
-Why does MAF have to lose his confidence every year? elite goalies play every game and keep their team in every game.

Pretty much this. Also, Sid should be out at the beginning of every PK, if for nothing else just to win a faceoff, which no one seems able to do.

Another game, another Crosby GIF:

I love this play. He sees his marker coming, and knocks him out to center ice, protects the puck, beats the defenseman, and does a nice give-and-go with Tanger.

Finally, this.

Another highly entertaining game for most hockey folks where the Penguins played exactly the kind of game they want to play.

-Sid is back to the 'holy ****, with a head shake' pre-concussion Sid. Every shift earns at least 1 'holy ****' followed by/accompanied by a slow head shake.
-D played pretty well even-strength all night. Kept the Leafs to the outside, and didn't let their speed be a deciding factor.
-PK is mud right now. They are as passive as I've ever seen a PK play. They don't challenge the points, don't clear the crease, don't contest entry into the zone, don't look to go the other way, don't aggressively do anything. I think the Philly PP last year completely scrambled their brains (players and coaches).
-BB may be the new 'piece'.
-It's hard to watch us lose D-zone face-off after face-off (especially short-handed) when our best face-off man is eating nachos.
-MAF was not the problem last night.
-Healing vibes to Geno.

4th line summed up in one fell swoop on the Leafs 4th goal... 4th line has puck possession late in the game, skates into leafs zone. INSTEAD of getting the puck deep and trying to cycle, whomever it was decides to fire a low easy no screen shot that is kicked out by the goaltender with no problem. Leafs pickup the puck and go in transition the other way, tick tack toe goal. Complete and utter stupidity from the 4th line.

It was good to see Sid go into the fire against a couple of "bad boys" like schenn and phaneuf this week. He clowned both of them hard.

Happy with the win, Toronto always gives us fits.
Happy with the defensive effort for most of the game.
Unhappy with the PK effort and 4th line play.
The upside is that a trade for a gritty 4th line player/PKer and physical defenseman shouldn't break the bank regarding prospects that would be demanded compared to trying to get a top 6 winger at the trade deadline.
