Real happy with his play but I'd still say Staal >Sutter but the gap isn't as big as I once thought.

i dunno man. Jordan Staal was a pretty darn special player. i'd hesitate to call this a steal, but considering the circumstances surrounding the deal GMRS did get a good return. Sutter has proven to be more than capable as a 3rd line center. now that crosby has 9 and 14, geno has BB and Neal, we need a wingerz for teh Sutter

I think it was a very good trade for both teams.

Well, considering that Staal pretty much put Shero behind the 8-ball when he turned down the Pens contract offer, I don't think anyone could have expected Shero to come up with a really decent deal for the Pens.

Always thought the trade as a whole was a steal for the Pens given the circumstances. Shero essentially had a gun to his head and no leverage. It was practically spelled out that Staal was going to Carolina one way or another and yet he got a good replacement in Sutter, a first round pick which he turned into an elite prospect and a top defensive prospect in the Hurricanes' system.

He did this... with no leverage at all.

I call that a steal.

Ok I'll say it. I like Sutter because I know he's given us fans 100% every game out there. Sometimes I don't know if I could say the same about Staal.

The trade was utter robbery.
Sure staal was a decent third line center. Occasional second line center but has he done anything this season with the added ice time and responsibilities? Nyet! We got their best defensive prospect and their first pick in the draft for a guy that wanted to go be an uncle and play with his big brother's kids instead of win championships... Lol... Oh and Sutter too... Really??? Theres no reason to even be discussing the trade.

Staal had his moments of deer in a headlights last year especially againt the Flyers in the playoffs. It was like he forgot how to backcheck. Sutter will surrpise us all in the playoffs.

GMRS is a GENIUS. He has won one cup with Crosby, Malkin, Fleury, Letang. He is a magician

Staal is a better player. More tools. When he does a better job of engaging Beast Mode more consistently, he'll hit a higher level than Sutter ever will.

But Sutter is a better fit for the Pens. He'll nestle right in that 3rd line C role, occasionally stepping up to 2nd line C as required by injuries. Solid, hockey-smart player with decent toolset. All at a much more manageable salary hit for the Pens.

This is the types of trades that make sense, as both teams get something they want/need. Instead of the typical fan-demanded trades where we give all our bad guys for all their great guys.

I think Staal is a better 2nd line center, but they're about equal in a 3rd line role. What I like about Sutter over Staal are his quick hands. His wit seems a bit quicker too.

The glaring hole without Staal is size on the 3rd line, something that should be relatively easy to replace.

Staal is better than Sutter. But I'd much rather have Sutter at 2 mil, than a 3rd line center with a 6 million cap hit. The extra $4 mil would be much better spent somewhere else.

Plus, the 1st pick and Brian Dumoulin are just icing on top of the cake.

I agree. I'm not saying Sutter is better than Staal but I think he fits in better than Staal did. Jordan has the talent to be a top two center in this league even though his numbers are not great this year. Sutter is a perfect fit for the pens 3rd line. Great defensively and can score when needed to.
Don't get me wrong I loved J. Staal as a pen but IMO the only difference between him and Sutter is physical play. Staal is a big guy and used his body but when it comes down to being a shutdown center and being responsible on defense imo Sutter is the right guy

The logic in this thread seems to say that Sutter is a better fit for this team because he's a worse player that is comfortable on the 3rd line. That doesn't add up. Staal is a better fit because he's much more talented. Even when he's crammed into a 3rd line spot. Our 3rd line has been nothing this year, offensively, and about the same as last year defensively, IMO.

Staal is a better player and a better fit. Having said that, Sutter is a solid player, and Shero definitely got a great return for staal. But at the same, swapping staal for Sutter still may end up being a significant drop when we need someone to make a big play in game 4 of the SCF or something. So in that sense, I'm still not sure I like that we traded him - even though we would lose him anyways this summer.

Maybe. I'm not submitting my verdict yet, at least.

But again, to the point of the thread, shero did work some magic with the trade.

Comparing two players straight up, it's clear that Staal is the better player.

Examining the trade is more difficult because of the two prospects, but the Pens did get some cap relief and a player under a reasonable contract for another year. The Hurricanes got a #2 center that wanted to play for the franchise.

I'd say, right now, both teams made out well. The long run may show the Penguins made out better...but only time will tell.
