I had some time on my hands last night, so I started brainstorming playoff projections. The Penguins obviously aren't going undefeated through the rest of the year, but it's pretty difficult to imagine any scenario where they lose control of the Atlantic Division. I was also intrigued by the Rangers' placement after their slow start.
There's lots of hockey left to play, but it will be interesting to see what teams are able to make adjustments for the final push.

You heard it here first. Pens go undefeated for the rest of the season.

curious. Formula probably ought to subtract 2 points instead of 1 though for games less than 20 (Pens scenario, for example, exceeds the Pens max points remaining by 3 points - the most they can get is 80)

The article acknowledges that. It's not going to happen. But if they continue playing how they have been, a 17-2-1 stretch or something similar isn't too far out of whack. They could also completely collapse and go 5-15. Hence the difference between prediction and projection.
Relantel, that's a good point. I was trying to not "punish" teams who had played fewer games by choosing a number that took points away a little bit more conservatively, but I didn't even do that math on the Penguins.

We still have to travel back to Carolina, Tampa and FLA.

Is this the kind of math you want being done by an educator of children?

True enough. Though I figure the types on there that are LGP types get it, so I'll still use it from time to time on there. And lets face it, I use twitter mostly for hockey, PSU and NASCAR.
