EDIT #eleventy: Penguins acquire Douglas Murray from San Jose for a 2013 2nd round pick and a conditional 2014 2nd round pick (the condition is activated if the Penguins reach the Eastern Conference Finals in 2013 OR if the Pens re-sign him, otherwise it's a 3rd in 2014)
Hoping for just a roster jockey like Jeffrey, since the Sharks love slow players. Or a draft pick, but that puts us in a roster crunch.
Not a great acquisition, but people here will like it in the short term...
My quick report on Douglas Murray:
Douglas Murray - Extremely strong player, quite possibly the league's strongest. His hits carry tremendous reverberations. As with most brickwalls on skates, he's not tremendously mobile. Strong but sluggish with long, slow strides. First priority is physical pain, everything else is secondary. Goes for crosschecks before stick checks/lifts. Does a poor job making himself available for passes and doesn't do a good job maximizing the area he's defending. Very good shot blocker. Can get distracted easily on the ice, needs to do a better job of anticipating the next move instead of making a reactionary physical offering. Giving Murray the puck is like punting on 2nd & 4.
Career: #6 physical defenseman, like John Erskine but without the fighting.
Has the least Swedish name in Swedish history.
In this thread:
GM Wilson praises Murray on departure: "This deal places Douglas in a quality situation which he deserves." (San Jose is not a quality situation, good point, GMDW) "He has been a warrior for our hockey club for the past eight seasons..."
Murray on trade: "San Jose has become home for me and I’m leaving with an empty feeling with the teams we had here not getting it done."
- Back and forth about the condition of the pick
- Lots of nodding
- A collective uneasy feeling about giving up two 2nd round picks for a rather low level defenseman, some tolerate it, some are belligerent as usual.
- I think that the Shero believes he's working with house money from the Staal/Sutter swap (acquired a "bonus" first, and a "bonus" second-round-caliber prospect in Dumoulin and is just parlaying them into assets instead of getting pigeon-holed into players he doesn't want or waiting around for Iginla until 2:59 pm)
- More head nodding
- Carolina was also in on Douglas Murray, Pens outbid them.
- I40 is called a dweeb.
- New numbers:
Musical chairs with jersey numbers today. Here are the new ones: Douglas Murray #3. Brenden Morrow #10. Tanner Glass #15. Dustin Jeffrey #17
