There is a protocol for an extension, but it wouldn't be granted as Bortuzzo isn't rehabbing an injury, I wouldn't think. Though, the "conditioning assignment" is not just for players returning from IR. It's understood that a player who has been scratched often can also utilize this feature.
Unless something has changed in the new CBA or have this all completely wrong. Not only does Bortuzzo still receive NHL salary, but he also continues to count against the 23-man active roster while on the conditioning assignment. I'll try to confirm this first-hand, but it's more than likely that if any of our beat writers are awake right now, they will beat me to it. Too easy of a loophole, IMO. I firmly believe he still counts against the active roster until proven otherwise.
It says he counts against the 23-man limit right in the link mikey
I could have swore that there was debate in this very thread about whether or not he counted! There's no way I could have made that up...what the hell?!?
It's okay, I won't take this opportunity to get on you about something because you are never wrong.
