Next year is a long time to project out...I just look forward to the next time Crosby and Malkin play a full game together.

A third year would more than likely bring the annual cap hit down.

I don't understand the problem with three years. He's been productive, is known for his rigorous conditioning regimen, and as you said, the cap hit would likely be brought down.

FLPensFan wrote:Looking at Capgeek, 2013/2014 is not really the issue, since Letang and Malkin are both signed for next year. Right now, cap is expected to be 64.3 million. Goalies are signed for 13/14, 6 defensemen signed (Martin, Orpik, Letang, Niskanen, Despres, Engelland), 7 fowards signed (Malkin, Crosby, Neal, Kunitz, Sutter, Glass, Vitale). Pens would have 11.5mil in cap space to sign players for next year. Add Iginla 2 years 4.7mil per, resign Dupuis 2 years at 2.25mil per, resign Cooke 2 years at 2mil per. That leaves 2.5mil to add 3rd line winger and 4th line winger. Put Bennett on 3rd line for a year, 900K, resign Adams for 700K. Roster filled, with 900K remaining for 7th defensemen (most likely resigning Bortuzzo for 600K). It is doable, but the Pens would have little wiggle room.

As I said earlier though, the player and their preferences has a lot to do with it. If Letang thinks the pens should pay him $7,000,000 starting in 2014-15...welp...see ya. If Shero says $5,500,000 tops, and Montreal says, $6,500,000...he ain't stayin'.

... except Montreal can't negotiate with him until he actually becomes a UFA, or we trade him.

That's interesting to eliminate 2 players that actually have contracts next year... That's a good trick
