We didn't get an elite winger for sid but we got one for Malkin. I think Neal signed for a long term deal makes a Malkin extension all the more likely.

Anyone think Iginla would sign a one year deal in the burg. I guess it all comes down to how it plays out for the rest of the season.

Anything longer than 2 years and no way we can resign Jerome.

We have Malkin, Sutter (RFA), Kunitz, Orpik, Dupuis, Letang and Despres (RFA) all due to resign after 2013-14. No wonder Shero is going for broke this year.

I can see option to Iggy that he stays, that we dont re-sign TK,Morrow and maybe deal Orpik off...
Also if he wont sign with Penguins,I think there is a good possibility that he re-sign with Flames.

A question - Iggy was RW,before he came to Burgh,Neal was LW.. Now they both will play on there's offwings with Geno??

Looking at Capgeek, 2013/2014 is not really the issue, since Letang and Malkin are both signed for next year. Right now, cap is expected to be 64.3 million. Goalies are signed for 13/14, 6 defensemen signed (Martin, Orpik, Letang, Niskanen, Despres, Engelland), 7 fowards signed (Malkin, Crosby, Neal, Kunitz, Sutter, Glass, Vitale). Pens would have 11.5mil in cap space to sign players for next year. Add Iginla 2 years 4.7mil per, resign Dupuis 2 years at 2.25mil per, resign Cooke 2 years at 2mil per. That leaves 2.5mil to add 3rd line winger and 4th line winger. Put Bennett on 3rd line for a year, 900K, resign Adams for 700K. Roster filled, with 900K remaining for 7th defensemen (most likely resigning Bortuzzo for 600K). It is doable, but the Pens would have little wiggle room. The other options would be to not resign Dupuis and Cooke, put Bennett in Dupuis's spot, and fill out bottom two lines with cheaper options. Trade Kennedy's RFA rights in the summer. While Dupuis, on open market, would be worth more than 2.25 mil, you have to wonder how much is the Crosby effect.

Mid-year 2013/2014 is where things will get really interesting, with Malkin and Letang UFA and looking for new deals, Sutter RFA. Plus, Kunitz, Orpik and Niskanen will be UFA. I don't recall if cap is fixed for a few years, or if it can go up again in 2014/2015. If it can go up, Pens would still be in good shape. Trading Martin at some point after this season would free up additional cap space if needed. How much, if at all, do you resign Orpik for? Does a 34 year old Chris Kunitz, coming off a career year, get resigned to more money at 34 years old? I see Malkin in the 9-10mil a year range, Letang in the 6-7mil a year range. Those are more of a known....how much does Sutter get? Is he worth 4mil as a 3rd line center? Lots of questions that really don't start until after next year, but must be considered.

In short though, signing Iginla to a reasonable 2-3 year deal does seem possible. And if this team continues to play well and does do well in the playoffs, it is possibly to retain most of the pieces.

No, all Pen's notes the past 2 days have stated that Neal will move to LW and Iginla will play his natural RW position going forward.

I don't think this is what you meant to say. I think you meant to say, let's see how many goals and assists Iginla has down the stretch and into the playoffs before we discuss bringing him back for multiple years, because, hey, let's face it, that the only way a large number of fans gauge any value in a player. We will continue to ignore the intense work ethic at both ends and leadership, as well as what he brings off the ice. :slug:

A third year would more than likely bring the annual cap hit down.

I don't understand the problem with three years. He's been productive, is known for his rigorous conditioning regimen, and as you said, the cap hit would likely be brought down.

Wow. The more I read this thread the more I'm thinking Letang will be the odd man out. Sure, his offensive prowess is nice, but it can be replaced (somewhat) with one of our new, young, cheap defensemen.

Martin,Orpik,Niskanen,Despres,Harrington,Bortuzzo is a possibility in 2014-15,Letang could be out if he seeks too much?!

Iginla back to RW, Neal back to LW in practice..

I'd be delighted beyond words were Iggy to re-sign for 2 or 3 years, but surely Letang is the higher priority signing.

As I said earlier though, the player and their preferences has a lot to do with it. If Letang thinks the pens should pay him $7,000,000 starting in 2014-15...welp...see ya. If Shero says $5,500,000 tops, and Montreal says, $6,500,000...he ain't stayin'.

That's interesting to eliminate 2 players that actually have contracts next year... That's a good trick

Which is exactly what will happen on July 1, 2014. (the negotaiting with teams willing to overpay...not the trading)

On a 3 year contract, the jump from Year 1 to Year 2, therein lies the problem. The extension from Year 2 to Year 3 is trivial.
