Just thinking it through, as there is no real salary cap in the playoffs, the Penguins could add a decent amount of salary more than they would've been able to as a result of the injuries to Paul Martin and Sidney Crosby, with a combined cap hit of 13.7 million, possibly going on LTIR.
So as I see it, the Pens can currently add about 16m worth of cap hits (per Capgeek) without Martin and Crosby on LTIR. LTIR allows for cap relief up to the same cap hit of the injured players, so an extra 13.7m.
If Martin and Crosby are out until the playoffs, the Penguins could add roughly something like 30m worth of cap hits, right?
So basically, we could add 3 Ovechkins and get Crosby and Martin back for the playoffs and not have anything to worry about with the salary cap rules, right?
