Game 41 vs. Bolts - Thoughts from the Morning After

Postby Penspal on Fri Apr 12, 2013 8:31 am

Pens win 6-3

- Thrilled to see some goals and another "W", but the Bolts are not playoff bound for good reason
- There have long been calls for adding Jokinen. To those LGP'ers who have done so, you deserve special praise, he's been nothing short of spectacular
- The line of Duper - Jokinen - Morrow has really gelled, where do we put Sid when he comes back :P
- HCDB had the unhappy stare going after a Bolts goal (caught on NBC feed), getting ready for playoffs?
- Vokoun made some key stops when he had to, PK had a couple of brain farts (credit to Bolts too)
- There were moments on TV where the crowd seemd to be more pro Pens than Bolts? A good Pens road crowd for sure
- Love Murray's approach to the game. He's got VIKING stamped all over him.... seemingly fearless and tough as nails
- Lots of surliness last night. Malone going after Orpik had to be my fav, with Morrow rubbing Bishop a close 2nd (MAF approvingly tapped Morrow upon his return to bench)
- Pens are unbeaten when Tanner Glass scores :P - Good to see him get off the schneid
- PDAS members are loving life right now.

Bennett looked good before with Malkin and Neal so...

Kunitz-Crosby-Iginla
Bennett-Malkin-Neal
Morrow-Jokinen-Dupuis
Cooke-Sutter-Adams

Pretty much solves every single problem that could come up on the forwards.

Iggy absolutely hammered that one-timer and Geno got a slick one. Those two catch fire and you better really sit back and appreciate what GMRS has done for us.

Tanger's stickhandling last night was fun to watch, too.

Letang's hit that took out two players was pretty nice as well......I know one of them was St. Louis, but still, it counts as two players!

Iggy has one of the best one-timers in the game today. That PP with Malkin on the right, and him on the left...yikes.

Which defenseman was it who had that atrocious giveaway that lead to that sustained pressure by the bolts when the score was still zeros? It was the rush where I think Thompson ended up whiffing on the open net.

Either way, nice to know that they get to add Martin to that group is pretty reassuring. Aside from the weak PK effort, they allowed what like 12 even strength shots?

-Forgot who Murray was fighting but he landed a pretty good right to Murray face, murray just looked at him like nothing happened
-i feel bad for TK, he is watching his replacement next year (Jussi) our perform him
-all the new pens are starting to fit in and gel which is very good

My thoughts:
- man are we ever stacked. We can site major stars and still have more than enough fire power.
- Letang, once again, is simply a special breed of player. That hand grab on the power play to keep the puck in is something very few people in the world can do. His dekes are stellar.
- That Jussi re-direct was completely ridiculous. How does anyone do that?
- for the abuse he gets, I thought TK played a really good game. His puck-handling keeps improving and, although he shoots too much, at least he shoots.
- Not Beau's best game and yet he still set-up scoring chances with sub-par line-mates. That penalty was BOGUS.
- When Sid is back, how do you not move Sutter to the 4th line? He looks like he is wearing down.

-Mr. Iginla and his shot made it clear that's ready to roll for the playoffs. That was just awesome.
-Very excited about the depth of this team....even with the current injuries
-Glass FINALLY gets on the board :fist:

i just hope we can keep improving like this with the new guys and when everyone is back i hope the lines gel perfectly and if they do i honestly dont know how we can lose. This is one of the deepest teams ive seen if everyone is healthy

love seeing morrow stepping up after so many thought he was a bust after 3 games
JJ what a trade the guy is on fire and looks great
I wish iggy got credit for that goal but hes just heating up

Sutter to the 4th line!? How will we ever replicate his 14 points in 41 games?

Eaton. And it looked like the puck hoped over his stick because of bad ice to me. Bolts took advantage and got pressure, but fortunately they didn't score.

If you move Sutter to the 4th line, you'd suddenly see the other team get a lot better in the offensive zone.

It was beautiful. But, let's be honest, that was all luck when you are 5-6 feet to the right of the net and at such a sharp angle. Freak goal...but we take them all!

That is the point that is lost on me as I am a hockey newbie. Apparently it is key for us to have a defensively oriented line assembled specifically to match up against the other team's top line. Why can't that line be one of our top lines?

14-87-12

or

19-71-18

who says our 3rd line has to be the line that matches up against their top line? Is that a specific strategy that's etched in hockey stone somewhere? I am not trying to come across as antagonistic. I am actually trying to learn and understand hockey better. Any help is appreciated.

I thought Letang was the best player on the ice last night - it's definately a different team when he's in the lineup...

Sutter looks like he needs a jumpstart of some sort, in terms of a new linemate or two. Not sure if that's going to be happening though. We'll what happens when/if everyone is healthy.

Because its more of an advantage to have a solid defensive line to match up against the other team's best offensive line, let the other team's best defensive line match up against crosby or Malkin's line, then leave the other one to face off against 1)A lesser offensive line who will not be as good at holding possession and 2)a lesser defensive line who will not be as good at keeping the offense at bay.

The team is definitely better with him in the lineup even with his frequent misfires on the power play. Can't wait till Sid and Martin are both back.
