The only way we could afford Ryan on this team is if we packaged Kunitz with Letang. Maybe for something like Ryan and Fowler.

Why would they want Kunitz back -- older and more worn out?

They only packaged Kunitz to get us to take Tangradi off their hands. They'd take him back.

Why would we move Letang for a less talented, less developed defenseman?

Less offensively talented. Letang isnt a very good defensive zone defenseman.

I dont think there is any way that they trade Sbisa and Ryan straight up for Letang.

That was your suggestion. But, because Letang is going to cost and arm and a leg to keep and they have Crosby/Malkin locked in forever. I actually like Fowler and think he is a decent option.

A top 6 of:

Ryan - Crosby - Kunitz
Neal - Malkin - Bennett

Would be nice.

Except that the other 16 players on the team would have an average salary of $1.85m.

Don't forget ANA has both Getzlaf and Perry at 8 mil plus for the foreseeable future. Not too different from the future caphits of Sid and Geno.

The last 3 spots are filler, based on who you bring in as UFA's and the price.

Brunner will stay in DET, and is NOT a bottom-6 guy.

Stalberg will be getting a pretty nice hike in salary come July.

1.585 million isn't enough to sign 3 players.

I went high on the 3 UFA spots in the starting lineup to conpensate. They likely wont use 2M for each of the 3rd line players.

Just something else I was thinking about with the news that Avs are high on MacKinnon

Letang to Florida for Gudbranson, Bergenheim, Pick (Jones).
Sign Steckel free agent.
Re-sign Duper and Eaton.
Tender Jeffrey (or some other cheapey).
Buyout Niskanen (compliance). [alternatively keep him, and let Jones play one more year in Portland]

FORWARDS
James Neal ($5.000m) / Evgeni Malkin ($8.700m) / Beau Bennett ($0.900m)

Jussi Jokinen ($2.100m) / Brandon Sutter ($2.067m) / Sean Bergenheim ($2.750m)

Plus, they have cap concerns.

Varlamov has never impressed me. I wouldn't go as far as saying he was outstanding. His save % was .903 and his GAA was above 3.

Minnesota could easily afford Fleury if they decided to move some dead weight. Heatley is a buyout candidate if they should so choose. Thats a lot of pressure on an unproven goalie with their teams talent.

I saw him play, he was easily the best player on the Avs for most of the season. Single-handedly keeping them in games despite terrible defense. So you can cite any stat in the world you want from the last place team in the league, I'm telling you that he was terrific this year.

They can't buyout Heatley because he's injured.

Well, that's the market right now. It's not that Fleury is so bad that he's untradeable, it's just that given the marketplace...well...he's untradeable. Not that anyone is salivating over his recent play, certainly...

I'm not worried about all that stuff, I'm worried about getting a new goalie coach in here and putting together a team that can help Marc find his game and still allow us to produce offense in a satisfactory manner. He has the tools, you know that, we all know that...it doesn't help us one bit to have a 3rd round pick instead of a 2x SC Finalist goaltender, it just doesn't. I don't think it's the roster that's failing us at all...it's how it is utilized that needs to be adjusted. Shero has provided the pieces to win, in my opinion...

When you have a team like Boston who blocks 20+ shots a game you need to find ways to get the puck low. out work the opposition, and get the dirty goals. This team has shown in two separate series when a team packs it in and forces the Pens to play on the perimeter they have trouble scoring. To me that's more personel than it is the system. A scrappy Leafs team gave the Bruins more trouble than the Pens. Could that have been a wakeup to the B's? Of course. But IMO our Power Forwards, Neal and Kunitz, if you can even consider them Power Forwards dont really take the puck to the net and create.

Neal means to be a power forward, but isn't. He takes chintzy penalties for selfish reasons. He's not a bulldozer. Kunitz just isn't a power forward. He's a good forechecker and two-way winger. He's a space creator, but he's not a power forward.

The Leafs gave the Bruins trouble because, well, Rask wasn't terribly strong in the series for starters. And then two, the Leafs forwards are very fast while the Bruins defense is very slow. Not only are they slow, but they aren't great puck movers. The Leafs took advantage of that and tried to cut the head off of the Bruins attack. Because once it gets passed the forecheckers, the Leafs defense is one of the slowest in the league and they were no match for the Bruins skilled forwards.

It wasn't the players that lost this for us. We needed a new direction, players follow the coaches orders and the coach led us to slaughter. And I don't say because I have an ax to grind with Bylsma, because I don't...but you can't walk right into the buzzsaw every day for a week and not expect to get cut...we did. It's not about power forwards, or Jordan Staal or Marc-Andre Fleury or needing Ribiero or Letang's turnovers or any of that noise...the #1 problem we had against Boston is that we failed to make any significant in-roads on their defense, no sustained attack. The Blackhawks are demonstrating exactly what I described in how to beat the Boston Bruins system, they have sustained attack and they have a .500 record in the series.

This roster could have, and probably should have, won if utilized correctly.

I'd take Franzen over Malone in a heart beat.

Notably, Franzen is not a power forward. There was a brief window where it looked like he was going to be one, but he hasn't played with any kind of gusto in years. He's a skill guy, he tries to dance out of trouble, he's not a power forward.
